Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer
Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer – Southmead Hospital, Bristol
About the Role
Equans is offering a permanent full-time position for an Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, working an average of 38.5 hours per week on a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern, rotating between 07:00–19:00 and 19:00–07:00, with 1 hour unpaid break per shift.
This role entails ensuring the safe operation, planned, and reactive maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, associated plant, and equipment across the site.
Key Responsibilities
- Report to the Shift Lead / Operations Manager
- Manage planned and reactive maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems and related plant/equipment
- Perform maintenance and repair works, including:
- Breakdown repairs
- Installation of new systems
- Refurbishment projects
- Capital works replacement programmes
- Execute repairs and cleaning for mechanical components and equipment
- Maintain and repair:
- HVAC systems
- Gas appliances
- Piped Medical Gas systems
- Steam plant/equipment
- Equipment in plant rooms, patient areas, and departments
- Prepare pressure vessels for insurance inspections and conduct necessary repairs/testing
- Oversee and manage specialist sub-contractors while adhering to safe systems of work and permit-to-work standards
- Ensure timely completion of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks within contract timescales
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
✔ Must hold a recognised electrical trade apprenticeship with:
- Level 2 or 3 qualifications (both theory and practical)
- Relevance to an electrical discipline
- 18th Edition certification

✔ Comprehensive knowledge of:
- Engineering building services installation and maintenance
- M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) testing, fault diagnosis, maintenance, refurbishment, and installation
✔ Ability to:
- Work independently or collaboratively as part of a team
- Adapt to cross-skilling opportunities
- Read and interpret technical drawings
- Diagnose electrical/mechanical faults efficiently
✔ Strong communication and customer service skills (verbal and written)
✔ IT proficiency with a drive for personal development
