Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer – Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Duration: Permanent, full-time (38.5 hours per week) Working Hours: 4-on, 4-off rotating shifts Schedule: 07:00–19:00 / 19:00–07:00 with a 1-hour unpaid break
At Equans, we’re excited to offer a permanent, full-time opportunity for an Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer to support facilities maintenance at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. About the Role
Equans is seeking a motivated and skilled Electrical Shift Building Maintenance Engineer to report to the Shift Lead / Operations Manager, responsible for the safe operating, planned and reactive maintenance of all mechanical and electrical systems across the site.
Core Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day safe operation, servicing and maintenance of mechanical/electrical systems and associated plant/equipment.
- Conduct mechanical/electrical works including:
- Allocated maintenance works
- Breakdown repairs
- Installations of new systems
- Refurbishments and capital works replacement programmes
- Maintain and repair HVAC systems, gas appliances, piped medical gas systems, steam plant equipment, and ensure full functionality in plant rooms, patient areas, and other departments.
- Prepare pressure vessels for insurance inspections, followed by necessary repairs/testing.
- Work closely with specialist sub-contractors and contractors, adhering to permit-to-work systems and ensuring a safe system of work.
- Prioritise and complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks, maintaining contract deadlines.
- Work independently and as part of a team, contributing to improved equipment performance and flooring reliability.

Essential Requirements
You should possess:
- A recognised 18th Edition electrical apprenticeship qualification (or equivalent) with CT:21 level 2 or 3 (theory and practice) in building services engineering.
- Competent industry experience in mechanical/electrical systems, including HVAC, pressure vessels or medical gas systems is essential.
- Technical knowledge of M&E testing, diagnostics, maintenance, refurbishment, and installation methods.
- Independent working ability with strong team collaboration skills.
- Ability to read technical drawings and diagnose complex faults accurately and efficiently.
- Cross-skilling readiness to expand technical knowledge where required.
- Experience working on a rotational shift system (4x4 schedules).
Preferred Qualifications & Capabilities
- Experience in hospital environments, where high standards of cleanliness and fault diagnostics must be maintained.
- Health and Safety awareness and experience working with high-pressure systems.
- Proficiency in using technical specification documents and job intelligence documents.
