About the Role

We are recruiting for an experienced Electrically biased Shift Technician, to join our team based at our coffee manufacturing factory in Dalston, Cumbria. This is a permanent opportunity which will report into the Manufacturing Maintenance Manager.

Nestlé Dalston Factory in Cumbria is the European Centre for cappuccino and creamers producing a range of beverage products. These are produced through a highly automated PLC controlled process plant and automated filling and packing lines. It is continually developing and expanding leading brands such as Nescafé, Aero Hot Chocolate and Coffeemate. The factory is moving forward with continuous improvement principles and actively developing Lean/TPM processes so it’s an exciting time to be involved.

You’ll be part of a team of 24, split between day based and shift-based Technicians. The shift team is made up of 1 Lead and 5 shift Technicians split between Manufacturing, Filling & Packing department and Industrial Services. 2 Technician are based in Manufacturing, 2 in Filling & Packing and 1 in Industrial Services. The skillset is made up of Electrically biased and Mechanical biased, but you would be expected to support one another during breakdowns. For this role, you will be the Electrically biased Shift Technician for Manufacturing.

Previous experience in a Food Manufacturing environment is highly recommended. The main bulk of the process involves the following: 2 off Spray Driers and 2 off Evaporators. The auxiliary parts of the process uses the following; pumps, motors, valves manifolds, homogenisers, pasteurisers, separators, blowing systems, vibratory sieves, and much more.

Experience required for working in confined spaces, working at height, high pressure pipework and ATEX/DSEAR environments. Additional qualifications would be essential such as 18th Edition trained, Minor Works and Compex. PLC (Rockwell) and Instrumentation (BEAMEX) knowledge would be preferred but.

Your impact

Ultimately, you will support the factory in ensuring timely and efficient completion of maintenance and compliance-driven tasks and management of a small industrial services team who support the business across the whole site.

Your other key responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to breakdowns within the plant, maximising production output and ensuring the smooth flow of the operation.
  • Looking after all aspects of cost, efficiency, quality and maintenance activities including administration.
  • Contributing to the upkeep of all relevant technical documentation.
  • Participating and positively contributing to site initiatives as requested to include HACCP, ISO9002, CDM etc.
  • Raising purchase orders where required, liaising with the Maintenance co-ordinator to ensure that appropriate stock levels are maintained within budgetary constraints.
  • Support lead technician to complete remedial actions from Compliance audits.

Your ingredients for success

You will have strong engineering ability along with initiative and attention to detail. Experience of modern manufacturing techniques such as 5S, LEAN and TPM would be ideal.

You will:

  • Be educated to NVQ Level 3 and/or time served apprenticeship in an Engineering discipline.
  • Be able to demonstrate skills working on pneumatics systems, process equipment including gearboxes drives, pumps, valves, and/or packaging equipment.
  • Possess a logical fault-finding approach to breakdowns.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency whilst never compromising safety or product quality.
