Electrical Technician

Salary: £43,000 - £45,000 (depending on experience) + benefits Location: London (Harley Street area, fully onsite) Job Type: Permanent Hours: Full-time, rolling shift pattern (4 days on, 4 days off including weekends & bank holidays)


About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Technician to join our Engineering and Estates team at one of London’s leading private hospitals. In this critical role, you will ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our hospital’s electrical systems and infrastructure, supporting the health and operational needs of patients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

You will handle:

  • Technical fault finding, diagnosis, testing, and repair across:
    • Emergency lighting systems
    • Electrical distribution
    • General and specialist lighting
    • Fire detection systems
    • Standby generator plant
    • Security access control
    • Nurse call systems
    • Lifts (and assist in emergencies)
  • Maintenance activities, including:
    • Reactive maintenance
    • Planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
    • Visual inspections
    • Remedial works and minor improvements
    • Supporting capital projects
  • Compliance & safety: Adhere to electrical HTMs, statutory regulations, IET wiring regulations, and TLC policies at all times.
  • Emergency response: Serve as a key member of the Clinic’s emergency team for issues such as fire, security breaches, and lift entrapments.

Working in a fast-paced clinical environment, you will contribute to operational continuity, patient safety, and healthcare delivery.

Key Duties

Technical & Maintenance Obligations

  • Adhere to regulations – Compliance with electrical HTMs, wiring regulations (BS 7671), IET standards, and TLC policies.
  • Safe working practices – Conduct all work following risk assessments and safety guidelines.
  • Fault resolution – Diagnose and repair complex electrical systems; use electrical drawings and specifications.
  • Reactive & scheduled maintenance – Respond to urgent repairs and carry out planned preventative maintenance.
  • Emergency services – Deployment for fire emergencies, security, and lift entrapments as required.
  • Tool & equipment use – Operating relevant tools safely within workplace guidelines.

Operational & Procedural Tasks

  • Planning & reporting – Conduct inspections, improvements, and minor upgrades as directed.
  • Continuous development – Complete mandatory training and maintain professional certifications.
  • Confidentiality – Protect patient records, employee data, and clinical records in line with data protection policies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Shift availability – Be prepared to work on rest days (with additional pay) to cover absences, training, or critical maintenance.
  • Travel for training – Occasional overnight stays for seminars, courses, or plant assessments.

Example Shift Pattern

  • Weeks 1 & 2: Day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Week 3: Night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential Qualifications:
    • City & Guilds 2365 qualification
    • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or City & Guilds 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma
    • 18th Edition (BS 7671) Wiring Regulations qualification
    • Experience in commercial buildings
  • Desirable:
    • LVAP qualification (training support available if required)

Skills & Attributes

  • Problem-solving ability – Quick diagnosis of electrical faults.
  • Technical expertise – Ability to read electrical schematics and interpret regulations.
  • Communication – Professional and clear collaboration with colleagues and clients.
  • Commercial electrical experience – Proven track record in maintaining complex systems.
  • Safety consciousness – Strict adherence to workplace health & safety.
