Electrical Test Technician - Rolling Stock

Job Type: Contract
Location: Doncaster
Duration: 12 month contract | Potential for extension
Pay rate: Competitive
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Hours: Full Time

The Opportunity

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Electrical Test Technician to join a leading rail organisation at their Doncaster depot, working on cutting-edge modern rolling stock fleets.

This role is ideal for a skilled technician with strong electrical fault-finding, testing, and diagnostic expertise, looking to play a key role in ensuring fleet reliability, performance, and safety.

You'll be working in a highly technical environment, supporting maintenance, testing, software updates, and fault rectification on some of the most advanced trains in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

As an Electrical Test Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out complex fault finding, testing, and repair of onboard electrical systems
  • Undertaking hardware and software modifications in line with engineering standards
  • Verifying that rolling stock systems meet operational and design specifications
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and specifications
  • Diagnosing defects, assessing root causes, and completing safe, efficient repairs
  • Removing, replacing, and installing components using approved engineering methods
  • Supporting planned and reactive maintenance activities
  • Updating and maintaining records within SAP / Maintenance Management Systems
  • Identifying repeat defects and contributing to long-term reliability improvements
  • Supporting testing, trials, and in-service fault response
  • Providing technical guidance and creating work scopes for wider teams
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives across depot operations
  • Maintaining strict compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience & Competence

  • Strong experience in rolling stock fault finding and maintenance
  • Proven ability in electrical testing and diagnostics on modern trains
  • Experience working with technical drawings and schematics
  • Competence in: Depot protection; Working at height; Manual handling; Use of powered tools (air / 110v); Electrical crimping
  • Experience using SAP or similar maintenance management systems

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline
  • Mechanical & Electrical apprenticeship or HNC (M&E)

Desirable Skills

  • AC depot isolation
  • Experience with moveable plant
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Intermediate IT skills (Word, Excel)

Shift Pattern & Working Hours

  • Working hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm
  • Rotating pattern: 4 days on, 5 days off followed by 5 days on, 4 days off.
    • Example: Monday-Thursday, then extended break through to Tuesday
    • 32 hours one week / 40 hours the next
  • Overtime available
  • Flexibility required: There is potential for night shift working in the future as business needs evolve.
  • Excellent work-life balance with regular extended rest periods.
