Electrician

Electrician – Permanent Position

Location: HMP Whatton, New Lane, Whatton, Nottingham NG13 9FQ

About the Role

Join Amey, supporting Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in Facilities Management for prisons across the UK.

As an essential part of His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), you’ll make a real impact by ensuring safe, clean, and efficient operations in secure environments. Your expertise in electrical maintenance will help maintain the integrity of systems critical to prison security, staff safety, and operational resilience.


Standard Working Arrangements

  • Hours: 39 hours per week
  • Schedule:
    • Monday to Thursday: 07:30 – 16:30
    • Friday: 07:30 – 15:30
    • Weekend shifts: Required on a rota basis, with a 15% of basic salary allowance provided.

Salary

£30,866 – £36,135 per annum (depending on experience).


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Conduct planned and preventative electrical maintenance, including administrative tasks associated with inspections and testing.
  • Fault-finding, problem-solving, and resolving issues across electrical systems within HMP Whatton.
  • Perform like-for-like replacements and minor electrical works, adhering to:
    • BS7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations) – Experience in 17th Edition will be upskilled.
    • Ensure electrical safety tests are carried out and results recorded.
  • Maintain compliance with Health & Safety standards, Risk Assessments, and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Support the Responsible Person and Authorised Person when required.
  • Assist with escort duties or other operational needs as needed.

Essential Requirements

  • Qualification:

    • City & Guilds 2367 (Level 2 Electrical Installation) or 17th/18th Edition BS7671 (electrician survival guide or across-the-board certification). (Experience in 17th Edition accepted, with commitment to transitioning to 18th Edition after onboarding.)
  • Experience:

    • Strong health and safety knowledge and familiarity with preventative maintenance.
    • Excellent organisational, time management, and people skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines with independence and initiative.
    • Experience with heights, lifting, and manual handling (where applicable).
    • Basic IT skills required for documentation recording.
  • Desirable Skills (would make immediate impact):

    • Understand expertise in fire alarm systems or CCTV systems.
    • Electrical Systems Regulations awareness.
  • Security Cleaternity Check:

    • Prison Security Clearance and Standard DBS Check required. (Amey will support applications through this process).
