Electrician – Facilities Management (HMP Thameside, London)
Location: HMP Thameside, London Salary: £36,000 plus £6,200 annual London weighting allowance Exclusives benefits: Excellent benefits package Schedule: Full-time (Mon–Fri), mandatory overtime & 1-in-7 on-call rota with additional payments
About the Role
Ready to deliver impact every day? As an Electrician in Serco’s Facilities Management team across HMP Thameside, your role ensures the facility’s essential services are safe, secure and operational, supporting both colleagues and residents.
You’ll join expert on-site engineers who maintain and upgrade critical electrical systems, overcoming challenges with creativity while upholding world-class health and safety standards. Your work directly contributes to a compliant environment that matters − for wings, infrastructure, people’s lives − and fuels progress in the justice system.
What You’ll Do

Manage and deliver planned/maintenance activities for:
- Electrical plant & equipment (up to 240V AC)
- Diagnose & rectify defects safely & efficiently
- Quote costs where applicable
- Optimise efficiency where possible

Lead fault-finding and repairs with speed, while never compromising on safety

Link the technical blueprint to real-world practice:
- Install new plant/apparatus per specifications & *BS7671/IEE Wiring Regulations
- Read, interpret technical drawings/wiring diagrams
- Work from technical specifications or drawings

Ensure roof-rate compliance via immaculate record-keeping:
- Document tasks, update reports, and maintain technical & health/safety registers
- Minute changes, adjustments, or required upgrades for future reference

Maintain SOLID professional conduct across projects:
- Work 100% single-vehicle-operational on your own when needed
- Collaborate seamlessly with multi-discipline teams

✅ Core Criteria:
- Qualifications:
- *City & Guilds [2377/2376] Electricians Certificate in safe isolation and safe electrical working (or equivalent JIB or DVSA-recognised electrician competencies)
- *Current qualification to BS7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations, 18th Edition, showing recent CPD
- Technical:
- Deep expertise in low-voltage electrical systems (e.g. lighting, power, controls, IT cabling)
- Practical capability for hazardous areas (HAS/1A/1B assessed to *HSE standards)
- Ability to stress-test systems and read diagnostics, even under pressure

- “Never accept compromise” on adherence to working at heights, isolation procedures, and minimum PPE levels
- Commitment to proactive risk awareness—stops hazards before they cause damage or harm
✅ Core Culture Fit:
- Confident making decisions with minimal supervision, while keeping high compliance standards
- Team player across trades; communicates effectively with Engineers and Facilities staff
Vetting & Security Clearance
This position requires *Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance for government contracts, including:
- ID/employment/history checks
- Standard criminal record checks
For some elements of protective environments, you may also be asked for:
- Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) or Security Clearance (SC), depending on the task.
- Occupational Health Questionnaire to ensure physical suitability
