Electronic Engineer

Electronics Engineer (Embedded Software) - Home Based (Office Optional)

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £48,000 - £60,000

The Role

We are seeking a passionate Electronics Engineer with embedded software expertise to join our R&D team. In this dynamic role, you’ll play a critical part in designing and developing the next-generation sensing instrumentation, bridging hardware and firmware across:

  • Electrical circuit design
  • PCB layout
  • Firmware and embedded software development

This is a truly flexible role, built for those who thrive in a home-based environment while retaining the option of office collaboration as needed. Key points:

  • Full support and infrastructure for remote working
  • No fixed office hours—your schedule works around your productivity peaks
  • Fixed commitment: 1 fortnightly R&D team meeting (typically held on Friday mornings)
  • Part-time or split-hour applications warmly considered

Responsibilities

In this hands-on role, you will:

  • Collaborate on electrical circuit design and PCB layout, minimising manufacturing variance
  • Develop, debug, and test firmware for next-gen digital instrumentation
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and embedded software issues, supporting test engineering efforts
  • Take full ownership of features/components within active project workstreams
  • Maintain thorough technical documentation in an agile, sprint-based environment

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in Electronics Engineering with strong embedded software background
  • Proven competency working seamlessly across both hardware design and firmware development
  • Confidence using PCB design tools (e.g. Altium or KiCad)
  • Comprehensive understanding of:
    • Circuit design
    • PCB layout techniques
    • Digital signal processing (DSP)
  • Awareness of design for manufacture (DFM) principles, including:
    • EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility)
    • RoHS regulations
    • WEEE conformity
  • Experience with firmware/systems programming, preferably in C and/or Verilog
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented approach with the ability to independently manage workloads

Desirable

  • Experience working to standards:
    • ATEX (IEC 60079-11) for explosive environments
    • IEC 60068-2 (environmental safety testing)
  • PLC programming experience, especially with Siemens S7
  • Knowledge of:
    • STM32 or Zynq systems-on-chip
    • Automated test equipment (ATE) workflows
