Electronics Engineer – Contract (37.5 Hours/Week) – Smurfit Westrock

The Role

Do you have a passion for electrical systems and automation? As an Electronically Qualified Electronics Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and evolving our control systems and automation assets, ensuring reliability, security, and future readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Breakdown Response

  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and electronic faults across production and site systems.
  • Participate in the on-call rota for rapid crisis response during breakdowns.
  • Troubleshoot and repair:
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
    • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
    • Inverters and instrumentation systems

Continuous Improvement & System Development

  • Implement software and hardware upgrades to enhance performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Lead projects to reduce downtime through engineering improvements.
  • Manage automation projects, including panel and HMI design/installs.

System Integrity & Obsolescence Management

  • Monitor and mitigate risks from electronic component obsolescence.
  • Maintain a full control systems register, documenting critical spares.
  • Perform regular backups of PLC and HMI programs with secure version control.
  • Conduct preventive battery replacements (PLC and inverter).

Collaboration & Contractor Management

  • Coordinate external contractors and OEM engineers, ensuring compliance with safety/quality standards.
  • Provide technical training to operations and maintenance teams.
  • Liaise with suppliers/OEMs for parts, updates, and support.

Requirements

The ideal candidate must demonstrate:

  • Apprentice qualification in Electronics or equivalent technical certification.
  • Proven experience in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi).
  • Working knowledge of:
    • HMIs, variable speed drives, instrumentation
    • Control panels, electrical schematics, safety systems
    • Industrial communication networks
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in manufacturing/process plants.
  • Additional skills:
    • Fault-finding and analytical expertise
    • Read/interpret electrical and control schematics
    • PLC/HMI programming/modification competency
    • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to:
    • Work independently under pressure.
    • Maintain high attention to detail and reliability.

Flexibility & Contract Conditions

  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday (day shift).
  • Full shift coverage flexibility required, including weekend on-call rotations to support plant needs.
