Quantum Electronics Engineer - IC Design & Cryogenics
Mission PsiQuantum’s mission is to build the first useful quantum computers—machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems. Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact spans energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, [and] materials, fueling foundational industries.
Our architecture leverages silicon photonics, using the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry (including partners like GlobalFoundries) to produce billions of photonics chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonic solutions offer unique advantages: no heat sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, seamless integration with cryogenic cooling, and compatibility with standard fiber-optic infrastructure.
About the Role
In 2024, PsiQuantum announced groundbreaking, government-funded projects for our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives underscore recognition that quantum computing will shape strategic AND economic success—and that scale is the defining challenge today.
Alongside building hardware, we develop algorithms and software to unlock quantum advantages. Our teams collaborate with global industry leaders (Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, Mitsubishi Chemical) to prepare solutions for real-world quantum impact.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Key Responsibilities
Designed around the core needs of quantum readout and control:
- Design and implement RF and high-speed electronic circuits for quantum photonic hardware
- Develop electro-optic (EO) modulator driving electronics for precise control of optical signals
- Understand and mitigate quantum noise, signal integrity, and latency constraints
- Support superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs)—which will be critical for quantum advantage
- Partner with photonics engineers to co-design integrated RF-optical systems
- Build FPGA-based control/acquisition systems for quantum experiment automation
- Participate in debugging, optimization, and troubleshooting of complex cryogenic and quantum hardware
Requirements
Core Qualifications
- MS/PhD (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Quantum Optics, Nanotechnology, or related physics field
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- RF and microwave circuit design
- High-speed digital interfaces (e.g., ADC/DAC systems, HDMI, DDR)
- Electro-optic systems (e.g., laser diodes, modulators, detectors)
- Signal integrity & noise analysis (e.g., Modelithics, Keysight ADS/GaussianRF)
- Hands-on experience with quantum optics lab equipment (e.g., source profilers, noise analyzers)
Technical Depth
- Spiking photons: Emphasis on readout electronics for SNSPDs and framing ring
- FPGA development: Prioriding Verilog/VHSIC Hardware Description Language, Xilinx Alveo accelerators
- Cryogenic electronics: Principles of low-temperature signal conditioning
- Quantum communication paths: Loss and dispersion compensation
