Embedded Software Engineer (RTOS) – South East London
Salary: £65,000 + Bonus + Excellent Benefits
We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer (RTOS) to join a highly skilled software development team working on mission-critical embedded systems where reliability, performance, and availability are critical.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer with strong embedded C/C++ and real-time operating system experience to design, develop, and maintain software solutions running on dedicated hardware platforms. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of technical solutions, contribute to system improvements, and develop towards future technical leadership opportunities.
The Role
You will be responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of embedded software solutions, including:
- Developing and maintaining embedded software for real-time systems.
- Designing robust software solutions using C/C++ within embedded environments.
- Working with RTOS platforms including VxWorks, Linux RT, FreeRTOS, or similar.
- Applying real-time software principles including multi-threading, task scheduling, and deterministic processing.
- Supporting software architecture decisions and technical improvements.
- Integrating software with custom hardware platforms.
- Developing interfaces and GUI solutions using technologies such as JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and Node.js frameworks.
- Performing software testing, validation, troubleshooting, and technical investigations.
- Supporting continuous improvement of software development processes and tools.
- Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.

About You
You will have experience developing software for embedded systems, with a strong understanding of real-time software development.

Key skills and experience include:
- Strong programming skills in C/C++.
- Experience with embedded real-time operating systems, ideally:
- VxWorks (highly desirable)
- Embedded Linux / Linux RT
- FreeRTOS / SafeRTOS
- Understanding of real-time concepts including deterministic execution, multi-threading, and task scheduling.
- Experience working with embedded hardware environments and system integration.
- Familiarity with Git and software development best practices.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell would be advantageous.
