Embedded Software Lead

Location: Cambridgeshire
Salary: Competitive, dependent upon experience

Newman Stewart is partnering with a specialist technology business to recruit an Embedded Software Lead.

Our client designs and delivers integrated embedded systems supporting complex technical infrastructure. This appointment provides the opportunity to lead the development of a core embedded software platform, combining technical leadership, software architecture, and hands-on engineering expertise within a product-focused environment.

Job Summary

Operating within Linux environments, the Embedded Software Lead will define the architecture and technical direction of an embedded software platform supporting both current and future products. Responsibilities include guiding platform evolution, maintaining engineering standards, and ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable, and maintainable embedded software.

Working closely with hardware, FPGA, system test, and product engineering colleagues, the position combines technical leadership with hands-on involvement in embedded software development, debugging, and problem solving across complex software and hardware environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and own the software architecture and technical direction of the embedded platform.
  • Lead the Embedded Platform Team, providing technical guidance and support across development activities.
  • Ensure delivery of robust, high-performance embedded software within Linux environments.
  • Balance the development of new platform capabilities with the maintenance and evolution of existing systems.
  • Promote disciplined engineering practices including design reviews, code reviews, testing, static analysis, and continuous integration.
  • Identify technical risks and support root-cause analysis across complex software and hardware challenges.
  • Work closely with hardware, FPGA, and system test teams to ensure software development supports product priorities.
  • Coach and develop engineers within the Embedded Platform Team while supporting the continued development of technical capability.

Experience & Background

The successful candidate will bring demonstrable experience leading embedded software teams, combined with extensive hands-on engineering experience developing embedded real-time systems. Expert embedded C/C++ development within Linux environments, together with the ability to define software architecture and provide technical direction across complex embedded systems, will be important to the role.

They will demonstrate strong debugging capability across hardware and software boundaries, a structured approach to solving complex technical challenges, and the ability to lead by example within multidisciplinary engineering teams. Experience implementing disciplined engineering practices including design reviews, code reviews, testing, and continuous integration will also be essential.
