Job Description

EMC Engineer

Salary: £40,000 to £61,950

Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity.

Your impact

Do you want to work at the forefront of EMC engineering, supporting the development and qualification of next-generation defence systems?

At Leonardo, we have an exciting opportunity for an EMC Engineer to join our Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business in Edinburgh. This role offers hands-on involvement across development and qualification programmes, working closely with experienced engineers in a UKAS accredited EMC test facility.

The Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business is one of the world’s leading developers and manufacturers of advanced sensor and countermeasure systems. As an EMC Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting EMC activities across the full product lifecycle, from early design through to formal qualification testing.

What you will do as an EMC Engineer

  • Work in a team of Engineers to develop EMC modelling and analysis capability.
  • Provide EMC support and technical input to project teams, supported by modelling analysis and test.
  • Support EMC engineering activities aligned to defence and aviation standards such as MIL-STD-461, DO-160, DEF-STAN 59-411 and EFA EMC specifications.
  • Contribute to EMC testing, covering a wide range of radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibility test types. These include radiated susceptibility tests with field strengths not commonly seen in the commercial environment and defence specific conducted transient tests simulating NEMP events.
  • Support early lifecycle pre-compliance activities through to formal product qualification EMC testing.
  • Assist with the preparation, execution and reporting of EMC tests within a UKAS accredited EMC facility.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities within the EMC facility, including test methods, processes and automation where appropriate.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

  • Ideally experience in electromagnetic modelling software, however skills transferrable from electronic and mechanical design packages e.g. Altium and Solidworks will be considered.
  • Ability to perform electronic circuit analysis using e.g. Kirchoff’s laws and Laplace transformed elements in time and frequency domain.
  • Knowledge of the physics of electricity and magnetism.
  • Understanding of EMC requirements and their application to complex electronic systems.
  • EMC design principles and good engineering practice.
  • Experience in supporting or conducting EMC testing in line with military or aerospace standards.
