EMEA Commodities Legal Counsel – Markets - Executive Director

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Commodities lawyer to join the Markets Legal team as an Executive Director, providing senior legal coverage to the EMEA Commodities business. This role offers the opportunity to act as a trusted adviser to the business, delivering strategic, commercially focused legal advice across the full spectrum of financial and physical commodities activity. This is a demanding and rewarding opportunity for a seasoned commodities lawyer to engage in high-profile, innovative transactions, partner closely with senior stakeholders, and contribute meaningfully to the strategic development of a growth business.

As an EMEA Commodities Legal Counsel – Markets - Executive Director you will advise on complex legal and regulatory matters relating to commodities-linked financial derivatives, physical commodity trading, and structured commodity financing across energy, metals, and related markets. You will apply sound judgment to assess and manage legal and regulatory risk, translating complexity into clear, practical guidance that supports well-controlled growth in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As the EMEA platform continues to expand, you will play a key role in shaping the legal framework supporting the business, providing hands-on assistance across transaction structuring, negotiation, and execution. Working closely with colleagues across the global Commercial & Investment Bank Legal function, you will ensure regional initiatives align with global standards, governance, and control expectations, while remaining responsive to local market practice and regulatory developments.

Job Responsibilities

Provide senior, strategic legal support to JPMorganChase’s financial and physical Commodities business in EMEA, covering a broad range of products and markets including energy, metals, oil, gas, power, emissions, and related commodities activities. Partner closely with the business as it develops and expands gas and power capabilities in EMEA, advising on the legal, regulatory, and licensing requirements associated with establishing and operating new activities. Lead the legal structuring, negotiation, and execution of complex derivatives, financing, and physical trading transactions, delivering tailored, client-focused solutions while maintaining strong governance and risk discipline. Support innovation across the Commodities platform by advising on novel transaction structures, balancing commercial objectives with evolving regulatory frameworks and market practice. Negotiate, draft, and oversee key trading documentation, including EFET agreements and bespoke contractual arrangements, ensuring documentation is robust, scalable, and aligned with business strategy and risk appetite. Provide subject-matter expertise on applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards, offering clear interpretation and practical guidance to support informed commercial decision-making. Collaborate effectively across Markets, Legal, Risk, Compliance, Finance, Operations, and other control and support functions, managing external counsel where appropriate to deliver coordinated and efficient outcomes. Proactively identify, assess, and support the management of legal, regulatory, and reputational risks affecting the Commodities business, including monitoring relevant legal developments, supporting governance forums, and escalating issues appropriately.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
