About the Role

Join our Blast Engineering team within WSP UK’s Specialists Group.

You’ll work alongside a team of international experts, growing your expertise and collaborating on projects that transform society. Our team offers tailored blast engineering support to the entire business and provides independent, unbiased advice directly to clients.

As key members of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES), we deliver specialist structural analysis across diverse projects—from high-rise buildings and super slender structures down to bridges, shopping centres, arenas, and airports. We design structures to withstand potential threats while ensuring financial viability and attractiveness for end-users.


Typical Responsibilities

  • Conduct blast loading simulations using:
    • Hydrocode modelling
    • Simplified analytical methods
  • Perform blast loading structural analysis via:
    • SDOF methods
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Design structural components to mitigate blast and direct impact threats, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Interpret and coordinate blast requirements based on Security reports.
  • Contribute to R&D activities within the Advanced Structural Analysis Engineering team.
  • Attend client meetings as required.
  • Produve reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with structural, security, and façade engineering teams—both internally and externally.

Requirements

Essential

  • A degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in a relevant industry.
  • Knowledge of dynamic structural analysis and conventional engineering principles.
  • Basic understanding of FEA principles and their application to structural analysis.
  • Familiarity with blast engineering design requirements under extreme loading conditions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience using CAD software, including AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Strong multi-tasking ability with time management and workflow prioritisation skills.
  • Aptitude for learning/developing new skills and tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Desirable

  • Advanced degree (MSc, MEng, or PhD) with specialisation in:
    • Hydrocode modelling
    • FEA or non-linear dynamic structural analysis
    • Blast engineering
  • Scripting/programming proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience with blast protection standards, such as ASCE 59-22 or ISO 16933.
  • Familiarity with pre-processing software, e.g., Hypermesh.
  • Knowledge of structural detailing and its relevance to blast engineering.
  • Expertise in niche blast design requirements.
  • Experience with Viper::Blast for blast loading simulations.
  • Ability to use FEA software such as Abaqus or ETABS.
