British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for an ENGINEER I - CHEMICAL PROCESS in Southampton
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
Working in the Process Experiments Team, the focus of the role is helping to make better Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) innovations through demonstrating chemical engineering processes.
The expectations from the role are diverse. The theoretical part of the role requires creativity, teamwork, and constraint free thinking to discover all the different options for solving a technical challenge, and the practical execution demands a 1st principle understanding of the physics and chemistry that govern a process.
The role also involves an understanding of developing process and post process quality methods, environmental and health and safety procedures and the ability to clearly present new technical discoveries.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
Provide expert process support to New Category teams and the Innovation Development Centre (IDC).

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Collaborating with product developers to help drive creative thinking
- Identifying gaps and opportunities with both equipment and ways of working
- The develop and practical execution of process experiments
- Ownership of technical projects and workstreams ranging from the small to the large.
- Enlightening the organisation in new knowledge and ways of working
- Use of digital tools e.g. Microsoft Planner, Excel, Minitab, SolidWorks.
- Developing the health and safety of our processes

What are we looking for?
Experience Required
- Proven experience in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)
- Practical execution of laboratory and pilot plant processes
- Familiarity around crafting experiments, including simplifying the key question to be answered
- Addressing a wide range of audiences, with the ability to articulate the key messages
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
- Curious about science, and keen to understand the 1st principles of what makes something effectively work or fail.
- Understands the approaches in solving technical problems, both theoretically and practically
- Brings others with them, helping people at all levels in achieving more
- Shows maturity and insight in resolving people related challenges
- Can prioritise and coordinate
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
- Professional/academic achievement in an engineering or science field up to 1st degree level, or equivalent experience.
BENEFICIAL
- Education in Chemical engineering
- Hands on experience in an R&D pilot plant.
- Understanding of chemistry, formulating and rheology
- Familiarity of QC measurement techniques and equipment
- Knowledge of industrial processes e.g., mixers, distillation, extrusion, drying, pumping
- Knowledge of hand calculations
- Highly skilled in communicating stories of technical development, in a way that deeply engrosses the audience.
