Engineer Traffic Schemes

Grade 6- Development Control Engineer (£39,276 - £42,771 per annum)

We are seeking an experienced Engineer to primarily support development control, including planning applications and Highway Legal Agreements. The successful applicant may also support the delivery of highways, traffic, and parking schemes.

Reporting to a Senior Engineer and/or Schemes Manager, your role will involve:

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and assess highway and development-related applications, licences, and agreements under:
    • The Highways Act 1980
    • The Town and Country Planning Act 1990
  • Carry out technical reviews and provide engineering recommendations to ensure compliance with current standards and specifications
  • Liaise with Legal Services, developers, stakeholders, and public sector partners on highway development schemes and associated agreements
  • Prepare reports, cost estimates, and represent the Highway Authority at meetings as required

You will also contribute to traffic and parking schemes, including:

  • Assisting with budgets and financial reporting
  • Preparing certificates, final accounts, and cost statements
  • Supporting the successful delivery of commissioned works

The role requires:

  • Occasional work outside normal office hours (including site visits, meetings, and monitoring works, up to 36 hours per week).

About You

We’re looking for a candidate with:

  • Proven experience in development control (preferred but not essential)
  • Experience working with budgets and financial reporting
  • A background in highways, traffic, or parking services
  • The ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels
  • A recognised professional engineering qualification or equivalent technical experience

Note: Site visits may require travel in varying weather conditions, and suitable transport arrangements are the responsibility of the postholder.
