Engineering Apprenticeship

Progressive Technology's apprenticeship scheme provides students with the knowledge and training they need to pursue a career in engineering. The first year of the apprenticeship will be spent in their purpose-built training academy, with full support provided by the Apprentice Training Manager and full-time Apprentice Trainers.

Requirements

Essential qualifications:

  • GCSE in English (grade 5 or 7)
  • GCSE in Maths (grade 5 or 7)

Desirable qualifications:

  • A Level in Maths (grade 5)
  • Other relevant qualifications and industry experience (the apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect existing knowledge)

Responsibilities

What you'll do at work:

  • Learn basic machining and hand fitting skills
  • Progress to basic CNC machining through supervised tasks
  • Manufacture engineering tools and components
  • Work on a variety of machines in the training academy, including:
    • Centre Lathes
    • Vertical Milling Machines
    • Surface Grinding
    • CNC Lathe
    • CNC 3-Axis & 5-Axis Milling Machines
    • CAD / CAM Training
  • Receive monthly academic classroom-based training

Training:

  • Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training to gain professional knowledge and skills.
  • Training provider: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING LTD
  • Training course: Engineering operative (level 2)
  • Monthly academic training will take place on site in the Progressive Technology Training Academy, delivered by PDT Training.

Benefits

Wage:

  • £16,640 for the first year (may increase depending on age)
  • National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Hours:

  • First year: Monday - Friday, 8am to 4:30pm
  • Second year onwards (employee over 18): Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
  • 40 hours a week

Duration: 1 year

Start date: Monday 7 September 2026

Positions available: 18

After this apprenticeship:

  • Potential to progress to a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (3 Years, Level 3 then Level 4 HNC)
  • Potential to progress to a Technician Engineering Apprenticeship (4 Years, Level 3 then Level 4 HNC)
