About The Role

As an Engineering Director at Arbor Education, you will play a pivotal role in scaling the company's technological capabilities and strategic direction. This leadership position involves overseeing multiple engineering teams, fostering a culture of mentorship, and driving innovation in alignment with the company's growth ambitions. You will be instrumental in shaping Arbor's engineering identity, particularly in the context of the evolving AI landscape, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of industry advancements. Your focus will be on delivering customer-centric solutions, balancing technical excellence with commercial objectives, and cultivating a high-performance engineering environment. Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in leading and managing multiple engineering teams within a fast-paced environment. Proven expertise in developing and growing managers and senior contributors is essential. You should have a strong background in modern software architecture, with the ability to maintain credibility and foster trust with technical teams. Demonstrable success in utilizing data and metrics to drive continuous improvement, as well as experience partnering with product and business leaders to align technical strategies with commercial goals, is required. Additionally, you should have a track record of leading teams through organizational change, scaling challenges, and process improvements, all while maintaining speed and autonomy. Excellent communication skills, a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and a deep understanding of how AI will influence the software development lifecycle are also key qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an organization of seven or more engineering teams, directly managing Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers to deliver impactful results.
  • Foster a culture of mentorship, coaching, and professional development to build leadership capabilities within your teams.
  • Collaborate with Product Directors and VPs to ensure roadmaps are aligned with business objectives, customer needs, and technical strategy.
  • Enhance the maturity of the engineering function by leading by example and leveraging the latest advancements in AI and software engineering practices.
  • Promote a customer outcome-focused mindset, ensuring teams are solving the right problems rather than just shipping features.
  • Balance the delivery of commercial features with the management of technical debt, support, and architectural risks.
  • Navigate complex issues pragmatically, providing clarity and strategic direction to teams during ambiguity or uncertainty.
  • Utilize data effectively to monitor team health, drive improvements, and ensure sustainable engineering practices.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for critical issues, ensuring proper incident management, root cause analysis, and preventative measures.
  • Contribute to strategic planning by providing a technical perspective on investments, innovation, and future growth initiatives.
