About the Role

Job Title: Founding Engineer Location: London Area, United Kingdom (on-site) Contract Type: Full-time

As a Founding Engineer at Tribal Bio, you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain core technical systems powering the company’s products and internal workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with scientific and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable software and automation solutions, including data pipelines, integrations, and tools for research or laboratory use.
  • Engage in hands-on coding, system architecture, code reviews, and establishing engineering best practices.
  • Contribute to documentation and technical decision-making.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party tools.
  • Support experimentation and prototyping efforts.
  • Contribute to the hiring and mentoring of future engineering team members.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain backend systems, APIs, or data pipelines tailored to the sector, especially within biotechnology or data-intense environments.
  • Work alongside multidisciplinary teams to solve biological and technical challenges.
  • Ensure systems are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Establish scalable engineering practices, including tooling, processes, and sustainable code standards.
  • Partner in recruiting and training new engineers.
  • Balance prototyping and production build efforts seamlessly.

Requirements

  • Strong foundation in software engineering, including:
    • Experience with modern programming languages.
    • Proficiency in version control systems.
    • Familiarity with software development best practices.
  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing backend systems, APIs, or data pipelines, preferably in a scientific, biotech, or data-intensive field.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines—scientists, product teams, and operations—while translating technical concepts with clarity.
  • Experience navigating early-stage environments, such as:
    • Establishing workflows from the ground up.
    • Making informed architectural decisions pragmatically.
    • Working within limited infrastructure.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Sharp problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to reliable, maintainable systems.
  • Interest in biotechnology and innovative applications of engineering and data to address complex biological challenges.
    • Previous experience in biotech or life sciences is advantageous but not strictly necessary.
