Job Description
We're looking for an Engineering Lead to join the Account Management team. This team is building the Current Account and Everyday banking experience products, which sit at the heart of Wise. The team owns how customers hold, organise and move their money day to day - their main account and Jars, the home screen they open, the flows they use to move, convert and add funds - and the ledger and money-movement systems underneath that the rest of the company builds on top of.
Our mission is to make Wise the account customers reach for every day, and ultimately the last account they'll need to open.
The role spans engineering, product and people. You'll go broad across all three rather than deep in any one. You'll guide the team, own where it takes its systems technically, and partner with your Product Manager and Design to ship what customers rely on - staying close enough to the code to make sound architectural calls and unblock the team when it matters.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the team's engineers - own what they ship and their well-being, and build a clear view of how to grow each of them.
- Stay hands-on: write code, review designs and PRs, and drive whole features across backend, web and mobile, coordinating delivery across all three.
- Own the team's technical roadmap. Decide how the systems evolve, keep reliability and tech-debt risk in check, and make the architectural calls that matter.
- Partner with your PM and Design, and give sharp feedback on what's worth building and why.
- Work across boundaries with the teams we build alongside: Account Sharing on joint accounts, Send on how money moves in and out, Wise Platform on products they build on top of account.
What you'll need to succeed
We don’t expect candidates to tick all the boxes. If you have most of the below and want to grow into the rest, we'd love to hear from you.
Technical
- Strong backend engineering background, close to the code to guide senior engineers through hard problems.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures and microservices, and comfort making high-impact architectural decisions.
- Track record of owning the reliability, scalability and correctness of critical systems at scale.
- Comfortable in a JVM codebase, or confident you'll get there fast - we're on Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot.

Leadership
- Experience leading a team of engineers and owning what they deliver.
- Leadership through trust: you give people context and direction and let them own their work.
- A clear communicator who can hold a technical argument with engineers and explain it plainly to everyone else.
Product
- A product engineer’s mindset - you measure your work by customer and business impact.
- Bias to action and comfort with ambiguity: you move quickly without dropping quality.
Nice to have
- You use AI to build faster, and you're curious where it's heading.
- You've worked in fintech, payments or banking.
