Engineering Lead - Risk & Controls
Rate: £515/day (via Umbrella Company)
Contract Length: 6-12 Months
Location: Hybrid - Radbroke (2-3 days onsite per week)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Engineering Lead to support a large-scale Risk & Controls transformation programme. This role will provide technical leadership, governance, and engineering oversight across multiple delivery teams working on risk, compliance, controls, integration, and application enhancement initiatives.
The successful candidate will play a key role in application modernization, regulatory-driven technology changes, controls implementation, enterprise integrations, and technical delivery. This is a highly hands-on leadership position requiring active involvement in architecture reviews, technical problem-solving, and engineering governance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide engineering leadership and technical oversight across multiple delivery teams.
- Support application enhancement, modernization, and transformation initiatives.
- Define and enforce engineering standards, development processes, risk controls, and architecture best practices.
- Ensure adherence to coding standards, security requirements, deployment practices, and governance controls.
- Assess the impact of regulatory and compliance changes on applications, engineering processes, and operational controls.
- Collaborate closely with risk, compliance, architecture, audit, and product stakeholders.
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex engineering and production issues.
- Guide the design and implementation of scalable integration solutions across APIs, middleware, event platforms, and external systems.
- Conduct architecture reviews, technical assessments, code reviews, and compliance reviews.
- Mentor engineering teams and contribute directly to troubleshooting, prototyping, and delivery activities.
- Drive continuous improvement across engineering practices, controls frameworks, and tooling.

Required Skills & Experience
Engineering Leadership
- Proven experience leading engineering teams within large enterprise environments.
- Strong governance, stakeholder management, and technical leadership capabilities.
- Experience overseeing multiple concurrent technology initiatives and distributed teams.
Backend & Integration Engineering
- Strong background in backend software engineering and enterprise integrations.
- Expertise in APIs, microservices, middleware, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience building scalable, resilient, and secure applications.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across distributed systems.
Risk, Controls & Compliance
- Strong understanding of risk, controls, compliance, and regulatory considerations within regulated environments.
- Experience managing governance-driven technology changes.
- Familiarity with technology risk management, audit readiness, and operational control frameworks.

Cloud & DevOps
- Experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, monitoring, and deployment best practices.
- Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, observability, logging, and reliability engineering.
Software Engineering
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or modern backend programming languages.
- Experience designing and delivering enterprise-grade applications.
- Understanding of testing strategies, secure coding practices, software quality, and release governance.
- Hands-on engineering approach with the ability to contribute directly when required.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working on large-scale transformation programmes.
- Exposure to risk, compliance, or governance-focused technology initiatives.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery methodologies and enterprise engineering frameworks.
- Experience supporting geographically distributed teams.
- Knowledge of AI-enabled engineering tools or automation frameworks would be advantageous.
