Job Description

As a Train Maintenance Apprentice, you’ll be at the heart of delivering next-generation rolling stock maintenance. This four-year Fixed-Term Contract (FTC) opportunity includes comprehensive training across the full spectrum of engineering and maintenance responsibilities. You’ll work under expert supervision, develop expertise in railway operations, and support the achievement of engineering standards while upholding high safety, quality, and efficiency.

Key Role & Responsibilities

Your role will primarily focus on:*

  • Supporting maintenance specialists and team members in task-specific assignments, ensuring they are executed efficiently and safely.
  • Performing a broad spectrum of maintenance tasks with industry-leaning tools and adherence to strict quality standards.
  • Demonstrating self-reliance while remaining an integral team player—operating independently yet collaboratively as required.
  • Complying with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain and repair key railway assets.
  • Supporting team objectives through additional duties as requests arise.

Key Accountabilities as Part of the Apprenticeship Programme

Certification & College Requirements:

  • Actively participate in a formal Level 3 Apprenticeship programme.
  • Attend college sessions and complete coursework on time with distinction.
  • Engage fully in regular Career & Development Reviews with L&D, college, and management teams.

About You

We’re seeking a highly motivated individual with an interest in the maintenance environment and a strong work ethic—someone eager to progress within a manufacturing or engineering firm. This role is ideal for those who want to kick-start their career in an industry that is evolving and shaping the future of mobility.

Essential Requirements

  • GCSEs: At least Grade C/equivalent (4+) in English Language & Numeracy (or equivalents as accepted by UK Apprenticeship standards).
  • Passion for Maintenance: Enthusiasm for working in a reliability-driven maintenance and engineering environment.
  • Technical & Office Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Collaborative Mindset: Ability to be part of a team, attend discussions, and contribute constructively.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication for effective dialogue and reporting.
  • Time Management: Impeccable planning and organisational ability to meet deadlines.
  • Self-Driven Growth: Strong motivation and self-direction with a clear goal to advance into a maintenance or engineering career.
  • Health & Safety Awareness: Understanding of workplace health and safety basics and facility-required compliance requirements.
