Role Overview: Engineering Manager (Fixed-Term Contract)

Fixed-term contract of unknown duration (aligned to a maternity leave period) within Benifex’s award-winning Engineering team.

You will report directly to the Engineering Director and lead two dynamic, fast-growing teams:

Team 1: AI Brain

The world’s first AI-native Reward Benefits product, designed to help Reward Directors identify the most effective benefits packages for diverse employee populations using our 20 years of proprietary data and market insights. This product leverages data-driven AI to personalise benefit recommendations at scale.

Team 2: Admin Experience

A newly formed team focused on streamlining HR Admin workflows and unifying slick new interfaces across all Benifex products. Technologies include:

  • API integration to connect disparate systems for a seamless experience
  • User experience design
  • Efficiency improvements via automation

All roles are high-visibility, high-impact, and aim to transform employee and customer experiences.


Note: Full visa sponsorship is currently not available, and this role requires candidates to be based in the UK or Ireland.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

  • Directly manages engineers;
    • Goals: Provide tech guidance, estimations, and blocker removal—functioning as the first escalation point for issues.
    • HR responsibility: Defines hiring requirements, leads onboarding, manage D&I initiatives, and ensures fair performance management.

*Cultural & Growth:

  • Works closely with Product Managers and Tech Leads to:
    • Guide engineers on product roadmap, technology strategy, and product impact.
    • Offer coaching, mentoring, and growth feedback—balancing process and agile autonomy.
    • Drive quality ethics: Enforce coding standards, prevent technical debt, maintain security, and promote refactoring.

Performance & Process:

  • Standardises processes like agile ceremonies but retains squad-level autonomy for effective delivery.
  • Tracks tasks, sprint velocity, and project delivery against roadmap OKRs.

Alignment & Objectives:

  • Regular team syncs maintain visibility of progress and goals.
  • Translating company objectives into measurable outcomes for the team—OKRs used as a primary framework.

Wellbeing Safeguards:

  • Proactively tracks and addresses engineer wellbeing, burnout risks, or systemic issues (and escalates up the chain).
  • Synthesises engineer feedback to refine processes and culture.

Focus on Delivery & Improvement:

  • Uses data-driven metrics to evaluate team outputs and iterates on process.
  • Processes retrospectives to continually improve technical and people processes.

Recognition & Engagement:

  • Celebrates personal and organisational milestones, fostering motivation and a culture of engagement.

What We’re Looking For: Your Profile & Skills

Technical & Leadership Fit:

  • Experience in a scale technology company (e.g., Google, Microsoft, Uber, Booking.com, N26, Personio) or a high-growth startup (e.g., Monzo).
  • Proven ability leading teams of 3–10 high-performing engineers on complex, high-impact projects.
  • Hands-on leadership in Generative AI teams, ex: prompt engineering, fine-tuning, or RAG technologies.

Core Competencies:

  • Technical Translation: Experienced in translate product requirements into engineering plans. You prioritise maintainability, code quality, and minimise technical debt.
  • People Management: Drive psychological safety, manage feedback, and resolve team dynamics proactively.
  • Agile Expertise: Deep experience implementing and refining agile ateliers, including story 이용, task estimation, and sprint planning. Supports process upgrades.
  • Collaboration & Empathy: Strong's peer-to-peer communication and radical empathy—understanding engineer motivations and work styles to foster alignment.
  • Quality Champion: Deep motivation to uphold code standards across the team. Instigates a **sharing promotes best practices.
  • Process Mindset: Aligns delivery urgency with continuous analysis of outcomes and agile capabilities.
    • DevOps-first mentalities valued
    • Serve teams with metrics, code scans, and visibility.
