🦷 What We Do: Dentally, Our AI-Driven Dental SaaS Platform

Our SaaS product, Dentally, solves real-world problems in three core areas:

  • Clinical: AI-powered diagnostics and note-taking, giving dentists an extra set of ‘expert eyes' to enhance clinical accuracy. Delivers rapid, subtle condition detection from x-rays.
  • Practice Management: Automation for payments, workflows, patient management, third-party integrations, reporting, and instant messaging, reducing admin burdens.
  • Patient Experience: A digital-first, seamless journey where patients manage appointments, complete medical forms, and make payments—all on their own devices, eliminating outdated phone calls and paper forms.

🚀 Your Impact: Shaping Technical Excellence

In this role, you’ll:

  • Drive sound architectural decisions and raise engineering standards, ensuring systems are resilient, scalable, and easy to evolve.
  • Streamline development workflows, reducing friction while maintaining high-quality outcomes.
  • Strengthen operational readiness through improved incident playbooks, observability, and team preparedness.
  • Plan iteratively, enabling predictable delivery with clear stakeholder alignment.
  • Optimise reliability, observability, and developer experience to enhance long-term product stability.

🦾 Key Responsibilities

As Principal Engineer (with leadership), you’ll balance technical direction (~40%) and team leadership:

Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead a 4–6 person software engineering team with hands-on coding and technical decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact projects.
  • Champion scalable, secure, and simple architectural choices, weighing cost, performance, and maintainability.
  • Establish and enforce coding standards, best practices, and patterns via code reviews and documentation.
  • Identify and eliminate workflow bottlenecks, improving tooling, automation, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Create actionable incident playbooks and enhance monitor/alerting without increasing noise.
  • Scope work into manageable increments and ensure predictable delivery via robust planning/risk management.
  • Ensure services maintain SLOs, have meaningful observability, and incorporate postmortem lessons.
  • Automate repetitive workflows to reduce operational toil.

Technical Communication

  • Clearly articulate technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs to Product/Stakeholders.
  • Ensure engineering governance (testing, stage-gates) is consistently followed.

People Leadership

  • Lead and develop high-performing teams to exceed KPIs and targets.
  • Coach team members on best practices and continuous growth.
  • Ensure every engineer has Individual Development Plans (IDPs), regular 1:1s, and clear performance reviews.
  • Drive trusting, collaborative, inclusive cultures that empower team growth.
  • Hire A-team talent and develop recruitment strategies.
  • Champion diverse voices in alignment with Henry Schein One values.

🥳 Requirements: What You’ll Bring

Technical

  • Full Stack / Backend: Experience with highly scalable systems, ideally on Ruby on Rails.
  • Frontend: Strong background in business system web apps, preferably Ember.js.
  • Cloud Native: Hands-on experience building systems in AWS (after-the-hour stack).
  • AI (Bonus): Leverage LLMs to build customer-facing AI features (Cursor, SageMaker).
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to interpret data and anecdotes to drive meaningful change.
  • Flexibility: Adapt to shifting priorities while balancing strategy and execution.

Leadership & Culture

  • Technical Leadership: Proven track record directing engineering teams.
  • Shared Accountability: Experience collaborating with Product, Design, and Data teams.
  • Customer Mindset: Business and customer impact guide decisions over technical tangibles.
