Job Purpose

The Engineering Manager is responsible for the leadership, management and technical governance of MDH, ensuring the safe, effective and commercially successful delivery of engineering services to projects and clients.

The role is accountable for the planning, coordination and performance of multidisciplinary engineering resources, ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with company and client requirements, applicable legislation and industry standards. The Engineering Manager shall maintain the technical integrity and quality of engineering deliverables, whilst driving a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and engineering excellence.

The Engineering Manager will work closely with Project Delivery, Discipline Leads, and Business Unit leadership to ensure engineering resources are effectively deployed to meet business needs and project commitments. The role will also collaborate with OSL, the Integrated Delivery Hub (IDH) and Modular Division to optimise resource utilisation, share capability and support the successful delivery of projects across the wider organisation, with support from the Group Technical Services Director. The Engineering Manager will also be responsible for leading tenders which throughput MDH.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to support the delivery of projects
  • Foster a positive, collaborative and high performing engineering culture aligned with company values
  • Support recruitment, succession planning, competency development and retention of engineering personnel with support from the Technical Services Director
  • Conduct competency and performance reviews and establish development objectives for direct reports
  • Promote effective communication and collaboration across engineering disciplines, project teams and support functions
  • Work closely with other business units, including Integrated Delivery Hub (IDH) and Modular Division (MDH), to optimise engineering resource utilisation and support project delivery requirements

Engineering Delivery

  • Manage the delivery of engineering activities in accordance with project schedules, budgets and quality requirements
  • Maintaining plan and budget attainment and high productivity within the teams, and holding the teams accountable for delivery to an agreed plan
  • Ensure engineering work is executed in compliance with company procedures, client specifications and applicable industry standards
  • Establish engineering execution strategies, resource plans and deliverable schedules
  • Monitor engineering performance and proactively address issues affecting execution
  • Ensure effective interdisciplinary coordination throughout all project phases
  • Support project managers in achieving project objectives and client expectations

Technical Integrity & Assurance

  • Maintain responsibility for the technical integrity and quality of engineering deliverables
  • Ensure technical reviews, verification and approval processes are implemented
  • Support design assurance activities, technical risk reviews and hazard studies
  • Ensure engineering risks are identified, assessed and managed appropriately
  • Drive lessons learned, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Promote engineering excellence and adherence to best engineering practice

Commercial & Business Performance

  • Manage engineering budgets, forecasts and resource requirements
  • Support proposal preparation, estimates and bid evaluations
  • Ensure effective utilisation of engineering resources
  • Identify and communicate engineering risks, opportunities and commercial impacts
  • Contribute to the achievement of business objectives through efficient and effective engineering delivery

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with clients and key stakeholders
  • Attend client meetings as required to provide technical leadership and engineering management support
  • Support resolution of technical and delivery challenges through proactive engagement with clients and project teams
  • Promote a culture of client focus and service excellence

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality

  • Demonstrate visible leadership in Health, Safety, Environment and Quality
  • Ensure engineering activities are delivered in accordance with company and client HSEQ requirements
  • Promote safe working practices and ensure risks are identified and mitigated
  • Support continual improvement of HSEQ performance across engineering activities

Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree qualified in an Engineering discipline
  • Chartered Engineer or actively working towards Chartership through a recognised professional institution

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in Engineering, Project Management or Business Management
  • Formal Project Management qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in engineering delivery within the energy sectors
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Experience managing engineering activities across all phases of project execution
  • Strong understanding of engineering management, technical assurance and project delivery processes
  • Experience in resource planning, budgeting and engineering performance management
  • Experience in both brownfield project delivery
  • Comfortable in conflict management and challenging teams to meet the key intentions of delivery and promoting accountability
