Job Description

Are you an experienced engineering leader with a passion for delivering complex technical projects? Do you thrive in a customer-facing environment where technical excellence, leadership and innovation drive success?

As Assystem's Defence business continues to grow, we're looking for an experienced Project Engineering Manager to lead the technical delivery of key engineering projects within our prestigious client account.

Based in Derby, this role offers flexible working where appropriate, alongside regular travel to client and Assystem sites.

Reporting to the Technical Director, you'll play a pivotal role in leading engineering teams, driving technical excellence and supporting the continued growth of our Defence business.

🌟 Your missions

  • Providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to Technical Leads and engineering delivery teams.
  • Leading the technical delivery, direction and solution for multiple engineering projects.
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Ensuring all engineers fully understand project requirements, technical processes and applicable methods.
  • Leading project Change Control activities.
  • Taking ownership of technical quality, ensuring all deliverables meet contractual and client requirements.
  • Acting as the primary technical point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reporting on technical project status, risks and progress to senior stakeholders.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered in accordance with relevant technical, quality and regulatory standards, including Assystem and client Quality Management Systems.
  • Ensuring engineering teams are suitably qualified and experienced (SQEP) for their assigned responsibilities.
  • Supporting business growth by contributing to customer presentations, technical proposals and business development activities.
  • Building strong relationships and networks within the organisation alongside the Account Manager and Integrator.
  • Leading the technical aspects of bids and tenders, including scope development, methodologies and cost estimates.

💡 We're Looking For Someone Who

  • Has strong experience leading engineering teams on complex technical projects.
  • Can confidently manage multiple stakeholders and act as the technical authority.
  • Has excellent leadership, communication and mentoring skills.
  • Is passionate about delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Enjoys developing customer relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
  • Has experience supporting bids, tenders and technical proposals.

Qualifications

Education & Qualifications

  • Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or currently working towards professional registration.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong focus on delivering high-quality results on time and within budget.
  • Proven ability to oversee and manage multiple work packages simultaneously.

🛠️ Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience successfully managing and delivering engineering projects, including leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of applying a Systems Engineering approach, particularly in Requirements Capture, Validation and Verification.
  • Experience managing engineering scope across infrastructure projects from Concept Design through Detailed Design and Installation.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across multiple teams and organisations.
  • Experience within the Nuclear and/or Defence industry.
  • Knowledge and application of current legislation and regulations, including CDM Regulations, Machinery Directive and Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
  • Experience working within Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Business Management Systems (BMS).
  • Experience working with NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts is advantageous, although not essential.
