Engineering Manager
Engineering Manager – Maintenance (Manufacturing)
Location: Tewkesbury Salary: £60,000–£65,000 per annum (DoE) Hours: Monday–Friday
About the Role
This well-established manufacturer is seeking an experienced and dedicated Maintenance Manager to oversee engineering operations, ensure smooth equipment functioning, and lead a team of technicians. This pivotal role demands strong problem-solving, organisational skills and the ability to perform under pressure.
The successful candidate will:
- Drive a high-performing engineering team in a fast-paced production environment.
- Protect asset reliability through preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Initiate continuous improvement in equipment and process efficiency.
- Manage capital expenditure, including equipment upgrades and installations.
- Comply with all safety, quality, and environmental regulations (legally, efficiently, and safely).
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align engineering with production, quality, and maintenance goals.
- Steward the engineering budget, forecasting, controlling, and optimising capital and operational spend.
- Leverage a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for tracking, reporting, and strategic decision-making.
- Participate in site-level strategy, business planning and delivery of sustainability targets.
Key Responsibilities
Day-to-day Execution
- Manage and direct the engineering department, assigning duties, overseeing workflows, and upholding performance standards.
- Plan and execute preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for all critical production equipment.
- Troubleshoot issues rapidly, often in high-pressure scenarios, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Continuous Improvement (CI) activities to optimise both process and equipment reliability.
- Develop, approve, and deliver capital projects, including procurement, installation, and commissioning of new assets.
- Oversee and improve blow-by-blow technical operations (preventive maintenance plans, reactive work orders, etc.).
- Leverage data analytics (via CMMS and other tools) to drive informed maintenance decisions.

Strategic Leadership
- Advise leadership on equipment sizing, efficiency targets, and lifecycle cost considerations.
- Report to senior management on engineering performance, initiatives, and roadblocks.
- Support wider business objectives, such as sustainability goals, compliance risks, and profitability targets.
- Collaborate with other departments, including Production, Quality, and Technical (process engineers/homeowners).
- Popularly engage with the business, ensuring managers and operators understand engineering’s role in seamless operations.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure strict adherence to all relevant legislation (product safety, PPP guidelines, manual handling and so on).
- Drive DSEAR, COSHH and LOLER compliance on a day-to-day basis.
- Accountability for risk assessment, health statements, and conformity with industry standards (e.g. BS EN ISO 13316).
- Monitor and report on audit findings (QA, Health & Safety) and effect corrective actions identified.
- Attend to incidents, investigations, and compliance briefings from senior management.
Process & System Governance
- Administer the site’s CMMS with best practice Data Policy documenting and reporting warranties and service histories.
- Define and maintain KPIs for engineering department performance, aligning these with business objectives.
- Advise on operational orders (quarries by scoring, RMS repairs, etc.).
- Conduct compliance checks on suppliers and contract technicians as appropriate.
- Foster strong relationships with external stakeholders, warranting a productive interface with suppliers.
Required Experience & Skills
Essential
- Proven experience as a Maintenance Manager, ideally within a manufacturing environment (retail, food, engineering, or similar).
- Deep knowledge of engineering principles, from preventive maintenance schedules to predictive diagnostics, and their financial case.
- CGMP & Good Engineering Practice familiarity (if operating in a food environment).
- Tangible experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), including data extraction, reporting, and maintenance planning modules.
- Technical proficiency to enable productive discussions with operations/process (flaw detection, analysis, etc.).
- Operational, strategic, and financial acumen to balance COE, efficiency and CFY objectives.
- Strong leadership skills, with hands-on experience managing a diverse team.
- Strategic-minded with a focus on continuous improvement ( Lean, Six Sigma) and culture-building.
- Excellent collaboration ability, working smoothly with Production, Quality, Health & Safety, and Sustainability teams.
- Adaptability to work in a fast-valued environment, balancing technical, operational, and financial needs.

Nice-to-Have
- Practical experience with Production Management Systems (ERP) or MRP/MRPII.
- Familiarity with QIQ systems, error-proofing and autonomous supply chain (ASM) tools.
- Configuration and management experience of a CMMS that integrates with an ERP system.
- Experience implementing predictive maintenance strategies using IoT sensors or condition monitoring tools.
- Proven track record of cost-saving, identifying opportunities for savings beyond just ‘typical ROI/ROCE work’.
- Passion for sustainability, energy efficiency, and resource optimisation.
