Engineering Manager, Commercial Systems

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Manager, Commercial Systems based in United Kingdom.

This is a high-impact engineering leadership role focused on building and scaling internal systems that sit at the core of global commercial operations. You will lead a team responsible for designing, developing, and operating critical backend services and business platforms that power billing, data governance, business systems, and security-related services. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, requiring a strong focus on engineering excellence, delivery accountability, and continuous improvement. You will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure that internal products are reliable, scalable, and aligned with business needs. Operating in a globally distributed, open-source-driven environment, you will play a key role in shaping how commercial systems evolve at scale. This position is ideal for an engineering leader who enjoys solving complex systems challenges while growing high-performing teams.

Accountabilities

  • Lead and manage a team of software engineers responsible for building and operating internal commercial systems across domains such as billing, business applications, data governance, and security services.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of internal products, ensuring high standards of engineering quality, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Drive the development of backend services and systems (primarily in Go, Python, or Java), ensuring alignment with business and operational needs.
  • Support the professional growth of engineers through coaching, feedback, and structured development of technical and leadership capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions that deliver measurable impact.
  • Continuously improve engineering processes, system design, and operational practices to increase efficiency and system reliability.
  • Build a strong understanding of internal business workflows to ensure engineering efforts are aligned with commercial priorities and outcomes.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams in a high-performance, distributed environment.
  • Strong background in backend software development using languages such as Go, Python, Java, or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to own delivery of complex systems or internal platforms end-to-end.
  • Excellent engineering judgment with a strong focus on quality, scalability, and reliability.
  • Experience mentoring and developing engineers, with a track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across global, cross-functional teams.
  • Result-oriented mindset with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for delivery outcomes.
  • Bonus: experience in performance engineering, SRE practices, data systems, or business systems such as billing, CRM, or ERP platforms.
  • Bonus: familiarity with data governance, finance-related systems, or commercial operations workflows.
