Position Overview

Are you a visionary engineering leader passionate about operating in complex, heavy-industry environments and driving maintenance excellence at scale?
Following a multi-million-pound investment to upgrade our facilities—including a new Cold Mill, Warehousing, Engineering Workshops, and Stores—the Engineering Manager plays a pivotal role in:
- Developing a maintenance excellence programme
- Ensuring reliability, operational standards, and performance metrics
- Identifying and implementing crucial Capital Expenditure schemes
- Supporting Corby Operations Leadership Team (COLT) in strategic decision-making
The Engineering Manager is responsible for:
- Guiding a team of skilled engineers to maintain manufacturing assets and supporting infrastructure
- Ensuring adherence to safety-critical standards
- Continuously improving asset performance and availability
This is a dynamic role at the heart of steelmaking where you’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment that values leadership, innovation, and results.
About the Role
Based at: Corby Site (with occasional UK-wide travel for meetings and networking)
Reports to: Works Manager
Key Responsibilities (some, but not limited to):
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Provide engineering leadership to ensure compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations
- Stay current with evolving legislative requirements

Process Excellence & Asset Management
- Implement a fault analysis and validation system with:
- Asset criticality studies
- FMEA programmes (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
- Adoption of Tata Steel UK’s reliability maintenance excellence model
- Enhance diagnostic problem-solving skills across the team
- Drive improved Total Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and loss analysis
- Develop and execute maintenance improvement strategies
- Implement a fault analysis and validation system with:

Timetabling & Budgetary Control
- Plan scheduled maintenance stops, including annual and major refurbishment programmes
- Oversee the annual maintenance and repair budget, ensuring alignment with business objectives

Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor and coach for continuous skill development (just-in-time capabilities)
- Establish a modern apprentice development programme
- Upskill successors to key technical and leadership positions

Strategic Partnerships
- Collaborate within the business and across Tata Steel UK/Group on engineering strategy
- Ensure engineering initiatives align with company leadership standards
The Ideal Candidate
| Qualification/Experience | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Education | Degree-level qualification in an engineering field (Mechanical, Electrical preferred) |
| CPD Commitment | Chartered Membership (or progress towards) in relevant professional institute(e.g., IMechE, IET) |
| Industrial Experience | Heavy/medium industry site management with proven Maintenance Excellence programming experience |
| Team Leadership | Led a large (10+), multi-disciplinary team of engineers and crafts (preferably exceeding 100) |
| Technical Competence | Deep understanding of manufacturing KPIs, OEE, loss analysis, and maintenance metrics |
| Stakeholder Engagement | Assured and confident communicator; adept at liaising with internal/external stakeholders |
| Business Alignment | Commitment to Tata Steel’s long-term strategy, HSE initiatives, and operational excellence |
