Engineering Manager (Data Direction)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Manager (Data Direction) based in the United Kingdom.

We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to guide the development and growth of high-reliability, secure, and scalable data platforms.

This role combines technical expertise in data and platform engineering with strong people leadership and delivery ownership.

You will lead cross-functional teams responsible for building modern data capabilities that support analytics, AI, and machine learning initiatives.

Working at the intersection of engineering, product, and business, you will shape architecture decisions, engineering practices, and long-term platform strategy.

You will play a key role in driving an AI-first transformation while ensuring strong governance, security, compliance, and operational excellence.

Accountabilities

As Engineering Manager (Data Direction), you will lead engineering teams responsible for designing, scaling, and maintaining robust data platforms. You will combine strategic leadership with technical understanding to ensure successful delivery, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop cross-functional data and platform engineering teams, supporting career growth and fostering a culture of ownership and collaboration.
  • Own delivery, quality, and technical outcomes for data platform initiatives, ensuring alignment with business priorities.
  • Partner with Product, Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning, and engineering leadership to define and execute a scalable platform roadmap.
  • Drive improvements across engineering processes, including planning, estimation, CI/CD practices, testing, code reviews, and release management.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions involving modern data systems, including batch processing, streaming, lakehouse architectures, and hybrid infrastructure.
  • Ensure high availability, scalability, performance, observability, and reliability across production data pipelines and platform services.
  • Embed security, privacy, data governance, compliance, and data lineage principles into platform design and development practices.
  • Identify and reduce technical and data debt while maintaining strong delivery momentum.
  • Support hiring initiatives, team growth, and the evolution of engineering practices.
  • Promote continuous improvement through strong technical standards, effective communication, and customer-focused engineering decisions.

Requirements

You are an experienced engineering leader with a strong foundation in software or data engineering and a passion for building reliable, scalable platforms. You combine technical depth with the ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive complex initiatives from strategy through execution.

  • 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering, data engineering, or related technical fields.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams as an Engineering Manager, Team Lead, or similar leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of data engineering, backend systems, and data architecture principles, with the ability to contribute to technical discussions and decisions.
  • Experience delivering complex production-grade data platforms or systems in demanding environments.
  • Background working with high-reliability, regulated, or compliance-focused industries such as financial services or FinTech is highly valuable.
  • Solid knowledge of modern data platforms, including data modeling, distributed processing, pipeline orchestration, warehousing, and lakehouse technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with batch and streaming data systems, infrastructure automation, deployment strategies, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Familiarity with data observability practices, including data quality monitoring, metrics, logging, alerting, lineage, and performance optimization.
  • Strong leadership, communication, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills.

Nice-to-have Experience Includes

  • Building platforms supporting AI and machine learning workloads, such as feature stores, MLOps systems, model serving, or vector and embedding solutions.
  • Designing low-latency or high-throughput data systems.
  • Experience with trading, market-data, or financial technology platforms.
  • Knowledge of data governance, security practices, regulatory compliance, PII handling, audits, and lineage management.
  • Experience scaling engineering teams and supporting organizational growth.
