Engineering Manager - Power & Propulsion

Location: Scotstoun, other UK BAE Systems sites (hybrid working) with quarterly to monthly travel to Scotstoun or other UK sites Salary: Up to £64,500, plus bonus scheme (depending on skills and experience)

Role Overview

As Engineering Manager – Power & Propulsion, you’ll provide technical leadership, management expertise, and engineering oversight across the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Programme, focusing on Power and Propulsion. Your work will ensure complex, high-stakes systems meet cost, quality, schedule, and performance requirements, collaborating across stakeholders, suppliers, and customers.


Core Responsibilities

  • Technical & Delivery Leadership:

    • Lead the Power & Propulsion discipline, ensuring design maturity, requirements compliance, and seamless system/compartment integration to time, quality, and cost standards.
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and resolve technical conflicts to achieve successful system integration.
  • Stakeholder & Supplier Management:

    • Manage suppliers throughout the lifecycle, from technical specification & contract award to design reviews, integration, and final delivery.
    • Develop and maintain detailed delivery plans, assess risks/performance, and provide clear governance and stakeholder communication.

  • Design & Execution:

    • Drive design development & programme execution through 3D model reviews, layout development, issue resolution, and milestone achievement.
    • Liaise with internal (e.g., design teams, build yards) and external stakeholders (e.g., prime contractors) for end-to-end design lifecycle management.
  • Team Leadership & Culture:

    • Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing engineering team, focusing on coaching, DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), and continuous improvement.
    • Hold teams accountable for planning, task assignment, and progress reporting, fostering a professional and inclusive environment.

Key Requirements

  • Technical Expertise:
    • In-depth understanding of power generation and propulsion system design, with proven experience in requirements compliance, schedule/performance tracking, and risk management.
  • Leadership & Team Management:
    • Ability to align goals, coach talent, drive change, and track performance against time/quality/cost metrics.
  • Conflict Resolution & Decision-Making:
    • Deliver complex engineering solutions to rigorous specifications by resolving conflicts, managing trade-offs, and negotiating outcomes.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Exceptional skills in influencing, negotiating, and collaborating with technical teams, IPT lead, and customers.
  • Professional Registration:
    • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, with Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or on track for registration.
