Engineering Manager
Accountable and responsible for all design and engineering activities (all disciplines) within their designated sector, coordinated through the sector lead (Head of Sector/Sector Director) and Project Managers.
Role Responsibilities
The role serves as the functional leader for Engineers and Designers, supporting both internal teams and the "supply chain", operating within a matrix organisation structure collaboratively with Heads of (Discipline) Engineering.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting work winning, estimating, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities
- Acting as the sector-specific technical expert with responsibilities to resolve technical issues alongside Heads of Engineering
- Leading mentorship of graduates and promoting VVB’s CORE values in daily operations
Core Responsibilities
Technical & Team Leadership
- Provide leadership for all engineering and design activities to meet cost, time, and quality objectives
- Ensure compliance with VVB’s Design Management and Assurance Procedures and Quality Management System
- Conduct design reviews to validate buildability, constructability, and adhere to HSE best practices
- Oversee gradient checking and health & safety prioritisation

Stakeholder Management & Communication
- Foster effective internal and external stakeholder communication to integrate project requirements
- Manage formal communications (e.g., RFI’s, TQ’s, EWN’s, MAR’s)
Program & Resource Management
- Develop engineering hour estimates and programmes in alignment with scope, schedule, and budget
- Conduct proactive project inspections/audits and ensure issue resolution
- Monitor engineer allocations, ensuring they meet programme deadlines
- Maintain design registers, design management & assurance plans in compliance with VVB standards
Design & Technical Expertise
- Ensure value engineering engagement from early-stage design to optimise cost/functional balance
- Lead accountability checks, resolve non-conformances, and escalate critical issues
- Perform CAT 1 or 2 design checks
- Act as Design Manager for smaller projects
- Peer-review design projects from other sectors

Procurement & Planning
- Drive procurement of services/works required for project delivery
- Collaborate with Planning and Commercial Teams to refine project schedules and forecasts
- Ensure FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SAT (Site Acceptance Tests) compliance where necessary
Essential Qualifications
- Degree in an Engineering discipline, accredited by UK-based professionals (e.g., IET, IMechE)
- Professional Chartership registration (e.g., Engineering Council Chartership)
- Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution (e.g., IET, IMechE, IFE, CIBSE)
- HSE training qualification (e.g., SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely)
- CSCS Card with AQP or PQP minimum requirements
- Full UK valid driving license with use of personal vehicular access
