About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an Engineering Manager – Welding Development and Deployment, within the Inspection, Maintenance & Repair Services (IMRS) area of the Services business. This role involves providing leadership and strategic oversight to the Welding Development & Deployment team, supporting critical growth areas including:
- Expanded submarine programmes for the UK and SSN AUKUS agreements.
- Enhanced in-service submarine support for the Royal Navy flotilla.
You’ll collaborate with Engineering Managers and Project Delivery teams while leveraging support from broader Submarines and Sustainability operations.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
As the Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a team of engineers to develop, implement, and innovate welding solutions from concept to deployment, adhering to strict time, cost, and quality standards while meeting customer and regulatory requirements.
- Provide daily management of engineering programmes and oversee health, safety, and welfare across both laboratories and field/site environments.
- There will also be travel associated with this role.
- Manage audit programmes to ensure compliance with:
- Regulatory codes and certified standards.
- ISO 3834 Accreditation.
- Develop, implement, and consolidate a training programme aligned with the Structural Qualification & Engineering Procedure (SQEP) requirements to ensure compliance and readiness within the business.
- Actively proactively drive continuous improvement across all welding functional areas, securing rapid benefits creation potential for any and all changes whilst maintaining an ever-enhancing customer focus.
- Ensure the Sustainability & Efficiency Team considers supply chain and labor costs as key drivers of any continuous improvement activity, promoting a resilient and efficient work force within the wider submarine enterprise.
- Oversee team adherence to applicable company values and professional engineering standards, emphasising excellence and integrity.

Key Accountabilities
- Team leadership: Manage a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver cutting-edge welding solutions across diverse machinery used by diverse customers.
- Project contact point:
- Lead progress updates, technical discussions, and issue resolution with programme areas.
- Serve as the trusted resource for engineering technical guidance.
- Programme delivery:
- Ultrasound programme: Management and support of the internal ultrasound research and development and testing capability whilst ensuring that quality and support costs are maintained at minimal levels.
- Develop and steer resource allocation, task management, and scope adherence to meet programme targets while ensuring they enforce correct practices via supply chain partners.
- Supports the roll out of new technologies and phases out obsolete technologies in the correct order.
- The Management of authorities on creating due diligence grounds for ethically meaningful projects to be undertaken from a corporate perspective. You will be a key role in upholding and cultivating corporate values within the business.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- Proven Engineering Managerial background and extensive experience in design-to-manufacture processes, especially in bespoke welding techniques and equipment development.
- Degree (Level 6) in an engineering discipline or equivalent industrial experience, demonstrating the ability to lead this technical role.
- A highly driven individual with expertise in:
- Project planning.
- Risk management.
- Requirements capture and management.
- Minimum of 10+ years' hands-forward experience in design, development, and testing of bespoke welding solutions.
- In depth local knowledge of the welding support requirements for Type IV Naval Submarines, submarine specific building principles and validation testing.
- Apolitical, able to conduct your own due diligence for external contacts at supply chain level and maintain the business’ corporate values while on-site as well as with the supply chain partners you utilise.
- Must hold a UK nationality. Dual nationals may require additional background checks before joining Rolls-Royce Services Limited (RRSL).

Desired:
- Experience in training programme development and audit management across multiple welding documentation types.
- Strong understanding and application of healthy accountability frameworks, truly supportive of continuous improvement efforts.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: Competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience.
- Operating Level: Level C – Engineering Manager in the Transformation & Operations category (specified equivalent).
