Description

To provide technical support to staff and students in the Engineering, Green Technologies and Logistics School at The City of Liverpool College, Vauxhall Road Centre. The department has a range of engineering equipment which is used by staff and students in the delivery of a range of courses from entry level to HND (Level 5).

There are 2 labs equipped with FESTO equipment to support the delivery of higher level courses; offering the opportunity for students to complete practical work in key themes such as programming, pneumatics and hydraulics.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide technical support for staff and students in the delivery of practical sessions
  • To be responsible for supervising workshop space including tools and equipment, to prepare plans and schedules that meet the requirements of planned activities.
  • To liaise with the manager of the School, to ensure an inventory list is in place and accounted for to maximise the effectiveness of all specialist resources.
  • To work in collaboration with the Technician staff and lecturers to ensure facility and resource upgrades are monitored and equipment is kept current to industry standards, finance permitting.
  • To use specialist knowledge within the area of work to carry out a range of specialist and diverse tasks to support an effective, user friendly and professional service.
  • To provide general support for the teaching of students in the area.
  • To set up and operate a range of equipment to an agreed service level.
  • To demonstrate a range of equipment to staff/students and instruct them on the safe use of equipment and techniques.
  • To support the design of the equipment/workshop layout.
  • To carry out maintenance tasks including a range of testing to ensure equipment remains in a good working condition. This will include more complex equipment which may require a licence to operate.
  • To establish systems to ensure accurate records of maintenance are kept.
  • To transport goods and equipment using trolleys/vehicles around the faculty.
  • To train staff at lower level in particular areas of expertise and/or specialist knowledge.
  • To assist with training of other groups of staff with regard to a particular area of expertise and/or specialist knowledge.
  • To undertake risk assessments to ensure risks are understood, mitigated, managed and recorded in line with college policy.
  • To comply with internal and external health and safety guidelines, instructions and regulations.
  • To assist with budget and resource management.
  • To monitor levels of stocks and consumables and order replacements in line with the colleges financial regulations.
  • Where it is identified as necessary handle cash/cash equivalents.
  • Comply with college security, stock control, cash handling procedures, standards and audit requirements.
  • Comply with financial regulations within own area of work.
  • Ensure high levels of customer service promoting a positive image of the College.
  • Resolve problems and issues, diagnose faults and respond to complaints and queries, where necessary refer on to the appropriate person.
  • Comply with set quality standards and procedural instructions.
  • Attend/arrange meetings as requested to support the work activities.
  • Help to ensure through good working practices that the objectives, values and aims of the college are achieved on time.
  • All staff will be expected to:
    • Carry out such other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of a post of this grade that may from time to time be required at a location determined by the needs of the service.
    • To make full use of new technology in all aspects of job requirements.
    • To attend and participate in section meetings and development groups.
    • To participate fully in staff development and practice, including available in-service training opportunities, the delivery of in-service training to others in the area of specific responsibility, and the college appraisal system.
  • Due to the changing nature of the work, this job description serves as a framework to outline the main areas of responsibility. You may be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within the remit of your area of work.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ 3 in Motor vehicle subject area or relevant industry experience
  • Significant, proven experience in a Motor Vehicle related position. Preferably ten years.
  • Specialist knowledge of Vehicle Diagnostics and equipment.
  • Ability to use a wide range of workshop based equipment, portable power tools and hand tools safely and confidently
  • Be experienced at heavy lifting and working at height
  • Experience of co-ordinating a technical team to support a performance
  • Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently using own initiative
  • Have strong customer focus and communication skills
  • Good practical skills and the ability to demonstrate to others
  • Must be committed to their own Continuous Professional Development

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the use of Portable Appliance Testing equipment (PAT)
  • Relevant maintenance knowledge within domestic, commercial and industrial applications
  • Hold a current driving license
  • Hold a recognised Health and Safety certificate, IOSH, NEBOSH
