Environment Artist – Star Citizen at Cloud Imperium Games
Founded in 2012 by renowned game developer Chris Roberts, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) is one of the largest global independent studios, dedicated to delivering next-generation AAA games. CIG prides itself on thinking outside the box, encouraging creativity, and developing ground-breaking technology. The studio believes in raising the bar for the gaming industry and the community as a whole.
About the Role
As an Environment Artist at CIG, you will help bring to life the breathtaking locations within Star Citizen. Built from the star system down, the game features vast, densely detailed environments where players can seamlessly traverse via ship—or, at any moment, exit and explore on foot.
Your responsibilities include:
- Crafting high-quality, hard-surface locations across all scales—from colossal space stations orbiting planets to sprawling cityscapes stretching to the horizon.
- Designing isolated research outposts, dark underground facilities, and countless other loci within a universe that prioritises cinematic sci-fi realism.
- Creating believable sci-fi spaces in myriad architectural styles that leave players awe-struck.
What Does an Environment Artist Do?
You’ll contribute to the vision through the following key tasks:
- Create high-quality, photorealistic sci-fi assets using a mid-poly workflow, including reusable architectural kits and hero assets tailored for visual consistency and performance.
- Assemble and dress environments within StarEngine, ensuring adherence to visual, technical, and performance standards.
- Collaborate closely with Art Leads and Art Directors to interpret and refine the artistic direction.
- Work with Design, VFX, and Lighting teams to strike a balance between art, gameplay, and player immersion.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
