Recruitment Process

Role Overview
ESL is seeking an Environment & Carbon Consultant with 3–5 years’ experience to support clients in improving their environmental performance. The role involves managing projects, conducting audits, developing carbon inventories, and supporting organisations in meeting compliance, ISO standards, and sustainability goals.
This is an opportunity for a versatile, delivery-focused professional who enjoys client management, project coordination, and expanding technical expertise in carbon reporting, ISO 14001, and environmental strategy.
Salary & Structure
- £35,000 per annum (full-time, permanent)
- Salary reviewed every 18–24 months
- Reports to the Managing Director, with oversight from Lead Energy & Carbon Engineer and Lead Environmental Manager as needed
- Enhanced DBS/security checks required prior to employment
Schedule
- Workdays: Monday–Friday
- Flexible working around core hours
- First 4 months: Office-based (full time in Selby)
- Ongoing: Must attend office weekly for meetings
- Hybrid working: Permitted after initial period (on mutual agreement)
- Fieldwork & travel:
- Essential: Reached by drive or public transport for client sites (primarily Yorkshire & North West England)
- Occasional: UK-wide travel (including overnight stays)
- Sporadic: Overseas travel may be required

- Holidays: 25 days + bank holidays
Essential Competencies
-
Degree-level qualification in:
- Sustainability
- Environmental Management
- Environmental Science
- Geography
- Business & the Environment
or equivalent via alternative routes

3–5 years’ hands-on experience in:
- Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- Carbon footprinting (Scope 1, 2, and 3)
- Practical carbon accounting (no reliance on specialist carbon software)

Proven ISO 14001 Lead Auditor qualification, including experience:
- Leading environmental audits
- Evaluating legal compliance

Competent in Microsoft Office Suite

Full UK driving licence + own vehicle (non-negotiable)

UK environmental regulations & carbon reporting frameworks knowledge

Ability to:
- Work effectively in a small team environment
- Self-manage projects and workload independently
- Engage clearly with diverse clients (e.g., engineers, managers, directors)
Desirable Competencies (Not Essential)
- Environmental Permitting & reporting experience
- Public speaking & presentations credentials
- SBTi (Science Based Targets) submissions support (developing inventories/targets)
- Practical Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) development
- Professional ISEP (Institution of Environmental Professionals) membership (PISEP)
- Knowledge of net-zero strategies across sectors
- Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) experience, with willingness to learn CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism)
Key Responsibilities
You will be a client-facing consultant, responsible for:

** Conducting ISO 14001 internal audits** for your clients:
- Evaluating compliance
- Writing audit reports
- Supporting system improvements

Developing Carbon Inventories following GHG Protocol standards (Scope 1, 2, 3)

SECR disclosures & regulatory GHG reporting, including CDP compliance
-
Supporting Science-Based Targets (SBTi) validation
-
Creating Product Carbon Footprints
-
Helping organisations implement ISO 14001 and the new standard ISO 14068 (Carbon Neutrality)

Assisting with client enquiries and broader carbon, energy, and sustainability projects
You will also support the Consultancy’s larger client projects and collaborate with senior team members.
