About the Role
As the Environmental Assessment Manager, you’ll be a critical gatekeeper for energy infrastructure projects, advising on whether they meet strict environmental regulations while aligns with UK energy security and net zero goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess technical environmental data to inform consent decisions for:
- Offshore wind, onshore solar, energy-from-waste plants, and carbon capture/storage projects.
- Products Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
- Provide independent, timely advice to further green energy growth and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate across sectors (environment, energy, and policy) to balance development against ecological integrity.

Person Specification
Core Duties
- Deliver evidence-based environmental advice on nationally significant projects, meeting statutory deadlines.
- Advise on onshore/offshore energy projects, ensuring Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) comply with Habitats Regulations.
- Work under fast-paced conditions with multiple stakeholders, projects, and deadlines.
- Collaborate within the Environment Delivery team to provide mutual support and share expertise.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria: ✔ A degree in environmental sciences (or equivalent). ✔ Experience writing/reviewing Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs) or Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). ✔ Proven ability to interpret complex environmental data and provide clear, risk-assessed advice to senior stakeholders.
Desirable Criteria: ✅ Specialist knowledge in landscape/visual assessment, land quality, water, noise, air quality, or human health impacts. ✅ Membership of relevant environmental professional bodies.
Assessment Criteria
During selection, we evaluate: Behaviours:

Technical Skills: Professionalism, application of environmental policy frameworks, and stakeholder management.
Selection Process

- Submit a CV + personal statement (max 750 words).
- Described your experience with Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs) and how it relates to the role.

Civil Service Tests:
- Contract numerical and verbal reasoning tests (complete within 48 hours of invitation).
- Tests available on CS Jobs; planned maintenance on Sunday, 28 June.

Salary & Benefit Summary
- Starting salary: £43,765.
- Civil Service Pension: Employer contribution of £12,678/year.
