Environment Manager

Birmingham (national remit with travel required across UK sites and Birmingham hub)
Are you passionate about driving environmental sustainability in major infrastructure projects? Do you have the expertise to lead a team in delivering outstanding environmental performance?
Laing O’Rourke is seeking an experienced Environment Manager for National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade (GGU)—one of the UK’s most ambitious infrastructure programmes. This is a unique opportunity to lead environmental performance on a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), working alongside industry leaders.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead environmental performance: Manage risks and ensure best practice across every project phase—from design through delivery.
- Drive sustainability goals: Support Laing O’Rourke’s net-zero ambitions by improving carbon reduction, waste minimisation, and biodiversity enhancement.
- Develop and implement ISO 14001-compliant Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and related policies.
- Stakeholder engagement: Collaborate with clients, regulators, consultants, and teams to ensure compliance and positive environmental outcomes.
- Incident & risk management: Lead investigations, reporting, and corrective actions following environmental disruptions or non-conformance.
- Mentorship & training: Build and manage a team, fostering coaching and development of environmental professionals.
- Data & reporting: Oversee environmental data, KPI tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.

About You
Experience & Knowledge
- Proven track record in managing environmental performance on large infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation and management systems (ISO 14001, ISO 50001).
- Solid grasp of BREEAM, Biodiversity Net Gain, and carbon reduction strategies.
- Familiarity with ISO 20400 and PAS 2080 is advantageous, along with experience in the power and transmission sector.
Leadership & Skills
- Strong leadership & coaching: Ability to set goals, inspire teams, and empower high environmental standards.
- Adaptability: Proactive approach to change management, aligning teams with evolving project needs.
- Must be comfortable with national travel to multiple sites.

Qualifications
- Degree in Environmental Management/Sciences, Sustainability, or a related field.
- Membership of a professional body (IEMA, IES, CIEEM) preferred.
