Environmental Advisor
Senior Environmental Protection & Sustainability Officer – Funded by DESNZ
Location: Hybrid (avg. 2 days at Mansfield office) Notice: This role is time-sensitive—application closes 5 July 2026.
About the Role

This senior technical advisory role will see you:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on DESNZ-funded projects
- Provide specialist environmental advice to Project Managers
- Lead legal compliance (UK environmental legislation), ecological surveys, and impact assessments
- Tailor scoping and procedures for pollution prevention (e.g., pollution mitigation, remediation)
- Embed MRA’s Sustainability & Nature Recovery Plans into operational projects
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
Core duties include:

Assessing environmental regulations and risks Provide strategic technical advice on plans, procedures, and regulatory compliance to prevent pollution and remediate legacies.

Supporting projects across the MRA Advise initiatives funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in areas like:
- River and site remediation
- Mine water heat exploitation (for net zero energy projects)
- Public safety measures

Leading environmental surveys and assessments
- Organise and evaluate ecological consulting reports and impact data essential for project development.
- Oversee field surveys, waste management assessments, and biodiversity enhancement plans.

Collaborating with Project Managers Act as the first point of contact for stakeholders, offering guidance on:
- Environmental scoping strategies,
- Consultation notes for third-party reports,
- Technical audits (e.g., before pollution prevention schemes).

- Implementing MRA Sustainability Initiatives
Help integrate projects into the MRA’s Sustainability & Nature Recovery Plan, ensuring:
- Biodiversity protection measures align with long-term ecosystem recovery goals.
- Pollution prevention, waste minimisation, and ecosystem services continue beyond project completion.
What You’ll Bring (Requirements & Desired Skills)
Must-Haves:
- Proven expertise in UK environmental legislation, including nature recovery/nature restoration goals across England, Scotland, and Wales.
- Expertise in regulatory compliance (e.g., Environmental Permitting, Net Zero policies) for industry projects.
- Experience with:
- Ecological surveys (e.g., flora/fauna mapping, habitat restoration),
- Writing scopes for environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and reports,
- Delivering results to diverse stakeholders (escalating from project managers to government agencies).
Strong Preferences:
- Pollution prevention experience, particularly working with historic mine sites.
- Understanding of construction, remediation or industrial waste hierarchy.
- Alignment with public safety and long-term neighbourhood improvements—key to the MRA’s DNA.
Note: While concrete experience is preferred, our focus is on applicants who showcase creative problem-solving and a commitment to environmental outcomes.
Successful Candidate Will
- Engage with UK-wide teams (onsite & remote).
- Work flexible hours, with an average of 2 in tandem days/week in Mansfield.
