Environmental Advisor
Environmental Advisor – The National Grid Leeds Project

The National Grid Leeds project seeks an Environmental Advisor to embed best practice, support compliance, and drive sustainability within our Environmental, Health, Safety & Engagement (SHES) function.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and promote best practice in environmental and sustainability matters in alignment with SHES standards and OSHAS 14001.
- Conduct regular site inspections to verify adherence to Company Policy, Procedures, Environmental Legislation (e.g., UK environmental laws in construction), and Contract Requirements.
- Lead incident investigations, analysing data, and proposing recommendations to prevent repeat offences.
- Collect, collate, and submit environmental and sustainability data (e.g., permits, permits exemptions, DCO/TCPA progress) to SHES teams for reporting and trend analysis.
- Identify key SHES trends, areas for improvement, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Develop and implement SHES campaigns, improvement plans, and training in collaboration with SHES Management.
- Support project teams by guiding them on environmental compliance, ecological mitigation, waste management, and biodiversity net gain.
- Ensure requirements for SHES consents, permits (e.g., TOCPA, DCO), and exemptions are met, and records are maintained.
- Work closely with third-party environmental/applied ecology consultants to share best practices across Murphy’s expanding E&S function.
- Advise on compliance with statutory provisions, including:
- Water management
- Pollution prevention
- Biodiversity Net Gain
- Waste minimisation
- Statutory nuisance and contaminated land assessments

Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Qualified with an Environmental Degree (or equivalent) and substantive experience in an Environmental Advisory role.
- Strong working knowledge of environmental law applicable in the construction industry, including:
- Ecological mitigation
- Consents, licencing, and planning discharges (e.g., DCO, TCPA)
- Biodiversity Net Gain
- Water management policies and pollution prevention
- Statutory nuisance and contaminated land regulations
- Construction/Infrastructure experience (preferably within energy or large-scale EPC projects).
- Direct exposure to third-party consultancy engagement (e.g., ecology/water specialists).
- Associate membership of the Institution of Environmental Officers and Professionals (ISEP) with progress towards Professional ISEP (PISEP) as a career aspirant.
Key Technical Skills
- Strong familiarity with Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) methodologies.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 standards and compliance frameworks.
- Experience with mitigation measures for HSE incidents and their root-cause analysis.
