Environmental Advisor – Great Grid Upgrade (Site/Project-Based Role)
Location
Grimsby (with primary focus on GWNC project) – Occasional travel to Birmingham hub for The Great Grid Upgrade.

About the Role
Laing O’Rourke seek a proactive Environmental Advisor to support a flagship project helping deliver one of the UK’s largest power network upgrades in decades. This is a transformative, decade-long project that will shape the nation’s energy future.
Your role will be hands-on, splitting time between the site office and fieldwork to:
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations
- Manage risks
- Champion sustainable practices across construction
You’ll be based primarily on one of the following key components of GWNC – the Principal Contractor for:
- 114km Overhead Line (OHL) enabling works
- 207 tower foundations
- Construction of a new substation
Project insight: The Great Grid Upgrade – National Grid
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and enforce environmental compliance per legal requirements and company policies
- Conduct regular environmental audits and inspections across sites and field locations
- Collaborate with project managers, contractors, and regulators to mitigate risks
- Provide expert guidance/training on environmental best practices for site staff
- Support environmental management plans, ISO 14001 EMS, and CEMPs
- Prepare and submit environmental reports and documentation as required

Person Specification
Experience & Skills
- Proven track-record as an Environmental Advisor or equivalent in **construction/energy sector
- Expertise in environmental legislation applicable to large-scale infrastructure projects
- Hands-on experience with:
- Sample collection (water, soil)
- Site investigations
- Noise/vibration monitoring setup
- Foundations and temporary works Environmental compliance
- Deep understanding of ISO 14001, CeMPs (Construction Environmental Management Plans)
- Strong liaison skills for working with multidisciplinary teams
- Valid UK driving licence and flexibility to travel

Qualifications
- Degree/qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or applicable fields
