Title

Environmental Consultant (Nuclear)

Title: Environmental Consultant (Nuclear)

Salary range: £61,600 to £92,400 per annum depending on experience

Location: Any FNC Office in the UK

Working Pattern: We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer-Nash, with time split between the office, client sites and working from home

Frazer-Nash have over three decades of experience in the nuclear sector, supporting our clients to meet strict nuclear industry regulatory requirements. We work extensively across UK civil nuclear operations and support nuclear elements of UK Defence platforms, infrastructure and equipment. Frazer-Nash have also built a long track record of supporting the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) for over 15 years.

Key Qualifications

Personal

Relevant degree or equivalent demonstrated experience. Relevant professional membership. Holding or actively working towards Full / Chartered status. Significant experience writing and editing high quality outputs in a consultancy or advisory setting. Significant experience writing high quality bids and proposals in a consultancy or advisory setting. Commercial awareness and attention to detail to manage project scope, risks, and costs. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive working relationships at senior levels. Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritise tasks in a consultancy setting with frequent shifting priorities.

Experience developing Environmental Cases and/or Environmental Safety Cases (ESCs) within a nuclear context. Demonstratable ability in management arrangements, radioactive waste management, quantification of radiological waste, and sampling arrangements, techniques and systems. Extensive knowledge of Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Documents (BREFs). Experience conducting BAT assessments would be advantageous. Extensive understanding of Radioactive Substance Regulations (RSR) environmental permits. Management and delivery of nuclear site or non-nuclear RSR environmental permit applications, variations, transfers and surrenders would be advantageous. Understanding of the Nuclear Justification Process (Justification of Practices Involving Ionising Radiation Regulations 2004). Demonstratable track record in developing or reviewing nuclear justification documents for nuclear new build would be advantageous. Experience in undertaking environmental related work for Geological Disposal Facilities (UK GDF or international projects). Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning Regulations (EIADR). Experience in preparing or reviewing Scoping Reports and/or Environmental Statements for nuclear decommissioning would be advantageous.

Desirable

Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and their applicability to environmental permitting compliance. Extensive knowledge of UK and European environmental legislation, particularly the Environmental Permitting Regulations, Industrial Emissions Directive, together with other relevant legislation and guidance. Demonstrable history of engagement with regulators (including the ONR, EA/NRW/SEPA, DESNZ, Defra and/or defence regulators e.g. DNSR). Demonstrable experience in the management and delivery of Installation, Medium Combustion Plant, or water discharge and trade effluent environmental Permit applications, variations, transfers and surrenders. Understanding and experience relating to Development Consent Order activities. Delivery of work in wider capabilities such as sustainability, carbon, Life-Cycle Carbon Assessments (LCA) and climate resilience.

The Responsibilities You Will Undertake During This Role Are

Acting as a technical leader and subject matter specialist within the Group and wider business, specialising within the nuclear domain as an environmental specialist. Managing business development activities with both the existing client base and to secure new clients. Delivery of complex projects (e.g. technically complex; or multi-disciplinary; or high value; or high risk; or long duration etc.) to ensure that they are delivered on time, in line with the agreed scope, to the desired quality standard and within budget. Undertaking technical verification reviews and approval of deliverables, ensuring quality, technical accuracy and effective communication of outputs for our Clients. Coaching and mentoring junior staff to support their career development. Staying current on changes in regulations and permitting requirements to ensure compliance for our clients.

Candidates will undergo pre-employment screening and satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
