Environmental Consultant (Nuclear)

salary range: £61,600 to £92,400 per annum (depending on experience) location: Any FNC Office in the UK

working pattern: Flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer-Nash, with time split between the office, client sites, and working from home

About the Role

The nuclear renaissance is here. From Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs), fusion, fuel cycle innovation, and grid-scale resilience—the UK requires environmental specialists, engineers, and systems thinkers to make a national impact.

Your role will involve:

  • Tackling pressing environmental challenges in nuclear energy
  • Strengthening UK energy security
  • Delivering high-quality engineering and consultancy advice
  • Shaping the next generation of nuclear capability

Frazer-Nash has over three decades of experience in the nuclear sector, helping clients meet strict regulatory requirements. We support both UK civil nuclear operations and nuclear elements of UK Defence, including infrastructure, platforms, and equipment. Our team has a 15+ year partnership with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).

Key Qualifications

Personal

  • Relevant degree or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • Relevant professional membership (holding or actively working towards Full/Chartered status)
  • Significant experience writing and editing high-quality technical outputs in a consultancy or advisory setting
  • Significant experience writing high-quality bids and proposals for consultancy projects
  • Strong commercial awareness, attention to detail, and ability to manage project scope, risks, and costs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of building senior-level working relationships
  • Ability to efficiently manage time and prioritise tasks in a fast-paced consultancy environment

Technical – Essential

a) Essential experience in at least two of the following areas:

  • Developing Environmental Cases and/or Environmental Safety Cases (ESCs) in a nuclear context

    • Demonstrated ability in management arrangements, radioactive waste management, quantification of radiological waste, and sampling techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Documents (BREFs)

    • Beneficial experience in conducting BAT assessments
  • Comprehensive understanding of Radiation Substance Regulations (RSR) environmental permits

    • Advantageous experience managing/ delivering nuclear or non-nuclear RSR permit applications (variations, transfers, surrenders)
  • Expertise in the Nuclear Justification Process (ionising radiation regulations)

    • Demonstratable track record in developing or reviewing nuclear justification documents for new build projects
  • Experience in environmental work for Geological Disposal Facilities (UK GDF or international projects)

  • Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment for Decommissioning Regulations (EIADR)

    • Beneficial experience in preparing or reviewing scoping reports and environmental statements for nuclear decommissioning

Technical – Desirable

  • Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and their application to permitting compliance
  • Extensive familiarity with UK and European environmental legislation
    • Environmental Permitting Regulations, Industrial Emissions Directive, and other regulations (e.g., DESNZ, Defra, defence regulators)
  • Experience engaging with regulators (ONR, EA/NRW/SEPA, DNSR)
  • Experience with Installation and Medium Combustion Plant permit applications, variations, transfers, and surrenders
  • Knowledge of Development Consent Order (DCO) activities
  • Engagement in sustainability, carbon, Life-Cycle Carbon Assessments (LCA), and climate resilience initiatives

Responsibilities

You will be expected to:

  • Act as a technical leader and subject matter expert in nuclear environmental specialist roles, providing specialist knowledge across the Group and wider business
  • Lead business development efforts with existing clients and new opportunities
  • Deliver complex projects (high technical, multi-disciplinary, high-value, high-risk, or long-duration) ensuring on-time delivery, scope adherence, quality, and budget compliance
  • Undertake technical verification reviews and approvals of deliverables, ensuring quality, technical accuracy, and effective client communication
  • Coach and mentor junior staff to support their career development
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and permitting requirements to ensure compliance for our clients

  • Candidates will undergo pre-employment screening and must satisfy UK National Security Vetting clearance criteria
