Environmental Coordinator

Location: London Contract Type: Permanent Salary: £26,871pa to c£31,613pa (depending on skills and experience) Flexible Benefits Fund: 15% (fully pensionable, paid on top of base salary) Organisation: HS2 Ltd


About the Role

The Environmental Coordinator at HS2 Ltd will support the High Speed 2 (HS2) SCS Integrated Project Team (IPT) in ensuring design and construction compliance with environmental requirements, commitments, legislation, regulations, and design constraints.

The role involves:

  • Providing assurance of compliance with environmental obligations (legal, regulatory, contractual).
  • Delivering environmental guidance to support project design, ensuring sustainability is embedded in critical context.
  • Assisting with environmental condition mitigation during construction.
  • Undertaking environmental assurance surveillance and supporting reporting and response processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Environment Manager (SEM) in organising, coordinating, and undertaking the environmental elements of the HS2 risk-based technical assurance workflows managed and overseen by the IPT.
  • Provide accountability support for internal and external reporting of environmental matters.
  • Ensure timely assurance and acceptance of contractor environmental reporting.
  • Track and coordinate communications on contractual environment-related actions.
  • Support and progress environmental innovations through identified contract delivery (contractors).
  • Conduct desk-based and on-site environmental assurance/surveillance.
  • Coordinate and report any findings linking to required performance thresholds.
  • Deputise for the Environment Manager as required.
  • Promote and embed the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) across all tasks.
  • Uphold HS2’s values: Safety, Leadership, Integrity, and Respect.

Key Requirements

Skills
  • Capability for complex problem resolution:
    • Problem analysis and solution synthesis across multiple data sources.
    • Logically structured report writing to inform stakeholders.
  • Decision-making proficiency:
    • Data synthesis, establishing options, and applying reasoning.
    • Strong analytical focus to support key-stakeholders with objective, evidence-based answers.
  • Technical communication:
    • Fluency in interpreting and explaining discipline-specific concepts.
    • Adaptability to deliver to non-specialist audiences responsibly or by supported liaison.
  • Technical data management skills:
    • Apply information governance principles, apply workflows/processes accurately.
    • Basic capability in data security, creation, and visualisation (under supervision).
Knowledge
  • HS2/Legislative Framework:
    • In-depth understanding of environmental law specifically as it applies to infrastructure projects.
    • Proficiency in regulatory frameworks critical to HS2 operations.
  • Awareness of existing HS2 commitments, including EIA, Habitats regulations, protected lower-tier species, third-party environmental consent regimes, and EU-related legislation.
Experience
  • Competency in time management:
    • Meeting deadlines reliably.
    • Prioritising tasks while communicating clearly and concisely in all interactions.
