Environmental Engineer/Compliance Manager

Location: Nottinghamshire (Hybrid) Industry: Energy Infrastructure and Storage

ABOUT

Our client is a dynamic powerhouse delivering grid-scale energy storage and power infrastructure across the UK. Backed by major infrastructure investors and scaling rapidly, our Client is recruiting for a Compliance Manager to join them on a permanent staff basis.

THE ROLE

You will be managing all areas of our Client’s environmental and regulatory compliance, engaging with stakeholders, and supporting the delivery of our Client’s energy development projects. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional with some proven relevant experience in the energy industry. The Compliance Manager will report to the Development Director but also work closely with the company’s Operations Manager and Control Room team based in Nottinghamshire. In addition, there will be interaction with the wider development and construction team in Merseyside to ensure that new projects consider the latest developments in terms of compliance and permitting for the schemes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Main accountability: Managing the company’s obligations under the MCPD and UKETS framework.

  • Monthly internal tracking/reporting, dealing with any metering issues with control room
  • Arranging and reviewing tendering from the external independent auditors
  • Preparing end-of-year reporting packs for external auditors. Meter data, photos, spreadsheets, QA documents etc.
  • Dealing with any improvement work required from audits. Submitting necessary permit Variations via Environment Agency Portals.
  • Entering annual activity data via Environment Agency Portals.
  • Managing annual subsistence charging in conjunction with our Client’s finance team.
  • Providing forecasting to Finance team to procure necessary UKAs from the Registry.
  • Assist with new Permit applications on new sites and submission of Permit Variations. This is carried out in conjunction with external consultants whom you will be interacting with on a regular basis.
  • Tracking of ongoing emissions monitoring requirements on a site basis.
  • Engaging with the Environment Agency to provide reporting of our emissions and ensure their compliance reports are received.
  • Scheduling emission monitoring with contractors and the Control Room and attending monitoring activities as necessary
  • Management and updating of our Client’s Environmental Management System as required under the Permitting regime.
  • General compliance activities as related to existing Sites but also our Client’s development portfolio of Battery Energy Storage (BESS) projects entering construction. Relevant knowledge of industry fire and drainage requirements would be advantageous. Proactive engagement with industry workgroups and consultations is expected to ensure the company remains at the forefront of industry.
  • Additional responsibilities may extend to assisting the Development Director with Capacity Market administration, e.g. annual prequalification and ongoing Agreement management activities. Experience in this role is desirable but not essential.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in environmental science or equivalent field
  • The successful candidate will have a good working general knowledge of the UK energy / power generation industry and specifically compliance requirements as these relate to peaking power and battery energy storage.
  • There is a need for good written and verbal communication skills and an ability to coordinate your own movements and prioritise your own workload.
  • Ability to engage with a variety of external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail in preparing applications and reports.
  • Proven experience operating in a similar industry in a compliance manager position, or as part of a government regulator or within an independent auditing company.
  • The role is based at our Client’s Nottingham Office but there will be a need to travel to the company head office in Merseyside and operational and development power generation sites, as well as to external locations, so a full driving license is required.
  • Relevant knowledge of industry fire and drainage requirements would be advantageous.
