About the Role
At EKFB, we are shaping Infrastructure for a better tomorrow. Our joint venture—comprising Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial, and BAM—brings specialist expertise in the design, construction, operation, financing, and maintenance of railway networks, including one of Europe’s latest high-speed rail projects.
We are recruiting an Environmental Manager to join our Milton Keynes team. This critical role ensures robust environmental governance, carbon performance, and sustainability deliverables across the C23 Main Works Civils Contract, aligning with HS2 requirements, regulatory obligations, and EKFB commitments.
The role holds responsibility and accountability for carbon performance while supporting sustainability efforts and environmental performance across the route. You will proactively manage risks and respond to emerging challenges in sustainability, carbon, and environmental disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide route-wide strategic environmental management to support implementation of Environmental Management Reports (EMRs), Construction Condition Post-Approval (CoCP), and the EKFB Environmental Management System (EMS) across all project sections.
- Support environmental governance and assurance, including:
- Engagement with ISO 14001 audits
- Compliance reviews
- Incident management
- Lead carbon management across the project, ensuring:
- Oversight of whole-life carbon assessments (LCA)
- Alignment with PAS 2080 and net-zero targets
- Drive carbon integration into:
- Design
- Procurement
- Construction methodologies, influencing decision-making
- Identify and coordinate carbon reduction opportunities across the route, engaging with:
- Delivery teams
- Supply chain partners
- Manage environmental and carbon performance reporting, including:
- KPIs
- Carbon Index
- Client (HS2) submissions
- Provide functional leadership to project teams and act as the primary interface with:
- HS2 leadership
- Senior EKFB leadership
- Supply chain partners
- Support sustainability performance and reporting, ensuring the integration of:
- Carbon data
- Waste management
- Water usage
- Responsible sourcing data through project systems
- Offer agile environmental support to the senior environment team on emerging issues, including:
- Soils & landscaping
- Environmental risks & opportunities
- Environmental consenting & archaeology

About You
Key Skills and Qualifications
You must meet the following criteria:
- Relevant degree in environmental sciences or a complementary discipline.
- Extensive experience in environmental management and sustainability in:
- Construction
- Civil engineering (Major infrastructure project experience strongly desirable.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to:
- Negotiate with internal and external stakeholders
- Registered Environmental Practitioner (or pursuing Full Member/Chartered Environment Practitioner status).
- Knowledge of NEC contractual processes (desirable but not mandatory).
- Strong understanding of:
- Environmental compliance
- Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001)
- Carbon management (including Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and PAS 2080 frameworks).
- Must hold a valid full driving licence and have access to a vehicle.
- Valid CSCS card ( White, White/Yellow, or Black).
