# STEP Fusion

UK Fusion Energy (UKFE) Ltd, a subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), is leading the development of sustainable fusion energy. Through the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme, we aim to build a prototype fusion plant, targeting first operations around 2040. UKFE will shape the future of fusion, collaborating with industrial partners and building a £7tn-per-year global fusion supply chain.

Onsite working is expected 3 days each week, with active support for Flexible Working.

About the Role

As Environmental Manager, you will define and deliver the environmental strategy across the full lifecycle of the STEP programme, from concept and design through to construction, operation, and decommissioning.

You’ll act as the senior environmental authority, ensuring:

  • Environmental risks are proactively managed.
  • Allegiance to regulatory, government, and public scrutiny.

Key Responsibilities

📌 Environmental Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and deliver the overarching environmental strategy aligned with regulatory expectations.
  • Embed environmental performance into engineering, design, and delivery decisions.
  • Provide senior-level technical leadership across the STEP programme.

🏢 Build & Lead Capability

  • Establish and grow a high-performing environmental function.
  • Develop capability within engineering and delivery teams.
  • Foster a culture of environmental stewardship, innovation, and collaboration.

⚙️ Design for Environment

  • Lead the development of a robust, evidence-based Environmental Case.
  • Ensure integration of environmental factors with safety, design, and operations.
  • Oversee environmental assessments, modelling, emissions, and waste strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with Best Available Techniques (BAT).

📝 Consents, Permitting & Regulatory Engagement

  • Define and deliver the environmental consenting and permits strategy.
  • Lead inputs for the Development Consent Order (DCO).
  • Serve as the primary interface with regulators and stakeholders.
  • Ensure submissions are robust, defensible, and credible.

About You

You are a strategic environmental leader with experience in large-scale, complex multidisciplinary programmes—preferably within regulated environments such as energy, nuclear, infrastructure, or major projects.

You will demonstrate: ✔ Proven track record of shaping and delivering programme-level environmental strategy. ✔ Strong expertise in environmental permitting, regulatory engagement, and impact assessment. ✔ Experience developing Environmental Cases or similar frameworks. ✔ Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and influence senior stakeholders. ✔ Attitude for navigating changing or ambiguous regulatory environments. ✔ Passion for sustainability and innovation in environmental performance.


The Full Picture

Setting environmental standards for a first-of-its-kind technology, you will work in a collaborative, mission-critical organisation, shaping a net-zero fusion future. The location is West Burton, Nottinghamshire, a Grade J role within the UKFE – Design Authority department.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or environmental field.
  • Chartered Environmental Engineer.
  • Extensive experience in environmental strategy, working on programmes of similar complexity.
  • Expert understanding of environmental and sustainability legislation.
  • Experience with Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Environmental Impact Identification (ENVID).
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 14001, including certification experience.
  • Confident project management and leadership capacity.
  • Clear and persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
  • IEMA certification in environmental management (or equivalent).

Beneficial

  • Proven ability to drive innovation and creative problem-solving in ambiguous or innovative environments.
  • Lifecycle experience of highly complex plant systems within major programmes.

Salary & Benefits

This role offers: 💰 £73,190 gross annual salary plus a non-contractual Specialist Allowance. 🏆 Outstanding defined-benefit pension scheme. 💼 Corporate bonus scheme (up to 7%), relocation allowance (if eligible), and flexible working. 🧘‍♂️ 25 days’ annual leave + 3 days’ Christmas closure & 2.5 privilege days (including all UK bank holidays). 🌱 Employee Assistance Programme, Mental Health First Aiders, career development opportunities, and a culture of equality and inclusive.
