Environmental Manager – England & Wales

Location: England & Wales (Hybrid with regular travel to operational sites, offices and client locations)

Role Summary

As Environmental Manager, you will lead and develop the environmental management function across England and Wales, ensuring compliance with:

  • UK environmental legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act 1990, Environment Act 2021)
  • Client requirements and ISO 14001 standards
  • Business objectives while driving sustainability, biodiversity, and carbon reduction initiatives

You will support Zero Harm and Responsible Business strategies by delivering environmental leadership across multiple sectors, including power transmission, utilities, telecommunications, civil engineering, and construction activities.


Key Responsibilities

🟢 Environmental Leadership

  • Provide professional environmental advice to directors, operational leaders, project teams, and clients.
  • Develop and implement environmental strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Promote a positive environmental culture through visible leadership and engagement.
  • Drive continuous improvement in environmental performance via:
    • Targets and KPIs
    • Environmental improvement initiatives
    • Stakeholder collaboration
    • Sustainability and Net Zero programmes

🔴 Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with UK environmental legislation, including:
    • Environmental Protection Act 1990
    • Environment Act 2021
    • Environmental Permitting Regulations
    • Acts related to wildlife, water, waste, and pollution (e.g., water Resources Act 1991, Control of Pollution Act 1974)
  • Manage relations with regulators:
    • Environment Agency (England)
    • Natural England (England)
    • Natural Resources Wales (Wales)
    • Local Authorities
    • Forestry Commission
  • Lead breach investigations and report findings to regulatory bodies.

⚙️ Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

  • Maintain and improve ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management Systems.
  • Lead internal audits and support external certifications.
  • Develop environmental procedures, standards, and guidance.
  • Manage legal registers, compliance obligations, and assurance programmes.

🔧 Operational Support

  • Provide environmental expertise throughout project lifecycles:
    • Tendering → Planning → Construction → Commissioning → Handover
  • Approve critical documentation:
    • Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs)
    • Environmental Risk Assessments
    • Method Statements
    • Waste and Pollution Prevention Plans
    • Ecological Management Plans
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and reviews.

🌱 Sustainability & Net Zero

  • Support sustainability strategies and ESG reporting requirements.
  • Lead carbon reduction initiatives, monitoring progress through performance metrics.
  • Identify opportunities for:
    • Resource efficiency
    • Waste reduction
    • Energy efficiency
    • Circular economy principles

🦋 Biodiversity & Natural Capital

  • Ensure compliance with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements.
  • Develop initatives to enhance biodiversity across projects.
  • Liaise with ecological specialists and implement habitat protection measures.
  • Support natural capital projects and environmental enhancement.

🚨 Incident Management

  • Investigate and resolve environmental incidents, complaints, and non-conformances.
  • Identify root causes and develop corrective actions for repeat prevention.
  • Report significant incidents to regulatory bodies as required.

🤝 Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with:
    • Clients, regulators (EA/Natural England/NRW), local authorities, and supply chain partners
    • Community stakeholders
  • Represent the business during:
    • Environmental audits
    • Client reviews or bid submissions

🎓 Training & Competence

  • Develop and deliver environmental awareness programmes and training.
  • Mentor Environmental Advisors and operational teams in:
    • Best practices
    • Lessons learned
    • Competency development

Direct Reports

  • Environmental Advisors
  • Environmental Coordinators
  • Specialist environmental consultants (where applicable)

Reporting To

Head of HSSEQ / Director of SHEQ


Qualifications & Requirements

✅ Essential

  • Degree in:
    • Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Ecology, or related discipline
  • IEMA membership (Practitioner (PIEMA) or Full Member (MIEMA))
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor qualification
  • Full UK driving licence

🤩 Desirable

  • Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status
  • Chartered membership with IEMA, CIWEM, CIEEM, or equivalent
  • NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate
  • Carbon Management qualification
  • Biodiversity Net Gain training
  • Experience with EIA/Environmental Impact Assessments

Experience

⚠️ Essential

  • 5+ years in environmental management in industries such as:
    • Infrastructure, utilities, power, construction, or engineering
  • EMS management experience with ISO 14001 certification
  • Regulator interactions (Environment Agency, Natural England, local authorities)
  • Major project support, environmental auditing, and compliance management
  • Incident investigation experience
  • Strategy development for environmental improvement plans

🔹 Desirable

  • Sector expertise: Power Transmission/Distribution, National Grid, DNO frameworks, or telecommunications
  • ESG and sustainability reporting experience
  • Biodiversity Net Gain implementation experience
