About the Role

Role Title & Location

  • Job Title: Environmental Manager – England & Wales
  • Reports To: Head of HSSEQ / Director of SHEQ
  • Location: Hybrid with regular travel to operational sites, offices, and client locations in England & Wales.
  • Direct Reports: Environmental Advisors, Environmental Coordinators, and specialist environmental consultants (where applicable).

Role Purpose

The Environmental Manager will:

  • Lead and develop the environmental management function across all operations in England and Wales.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, client requirements, and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Support business objectives by embedding accelerated sustainability goals, including biodiversity enhancement and carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Contribute to the company’s Zero Harm and Responsible Business strategies.

Responsibilities

1. Environmental Leadership

  • Provide professional environmental advice to directors, operational leaders, project teams, and clients.
  • Develop and implement environmental strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Promote a positive environmental culture through leadership and engagement.
  • Lead environmental improvement initiatives across operations.
  • Support environmental, sustainability, and net-zero objectives, reporting against KPIs.

2. Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with key UK legislation, including:
    • Environmental Protection Act 1990
    • Environment Act 2021
    • Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
    • Water Resources Act 1991
    • Waste Regulations and Duty of Care
    • Environmental Permitting Regulations
    • Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000
    • Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017
  • Monitor emerging legislation and advise the business on compliance requirements.
  • Lead investigations into environmental incidents and regulatory breaches.
  • Manage relationships with regulatory bodies, including:
    • Environment Agency
    • Natural England
    • Natural Resources Wales
    • Local Authorities
    • Forestry Commission

3. Environmental Management Systems

  • Maintain and improve the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Lead internal audits and support external certification auditing.
  • Develop environmental procedures, standards, and guidance documents.
  • Ensure environmental risks and opportunities are identified and managed.
  • Oversee governance and compliance programmes.

4. Operational Support

  • Provide environmental support across the full project lifecycle:
    • Tendering
    • Planning
    • Construction
    • Commissioning
    • Handover
  • Review and approve:
    • Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs)
    • Environmental Risk Assessments
    • Method Statements
    • Waste Management Plans
    • Pollution Prevention Plans
    • Ecological Management Plans
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and assessments.
  • Support operations in achieving compliance and best practice.

5. Sustainability & Net Zero

  • Develop and implement sustainability strategies.
  • Lead carbon reduction and net-zero initiatives.
  • Monitor and report environmental performance metrics.
  • Driving initiatives for:
    • Resource efficiency
    • Waste reduction
    • Energy efficiency
    • Circular economy principles
  • Support ESG reporting requirements.

6. Biodiversity & Natural Capital

  • Deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) compliance.
  • Develop environmental enhancement initiatives.
  • Liaise with ecological consultants and advocate for sustainable land management.
  • Support natural capital assessments and habitat protection.

7. Incident Management

  • Lead investigations into environmental incidents and non-conformances.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Report to regulatory bodies as required.
  • Analyze incident trends and provide insights for leadership.

8. Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with:
    • Clients
    • Regulators
    • Supply chain partners
    • Local authorities
    • Community stakeholders
  • Represent the business during environmental audits and reviews.
  • Support environmental aspects of client bids and framework submissions.

9. Training & Competence

  • Develop and deliver environmental awareness programmes.
  • Support team competency development through coaching and mentoring.
  • Promote best practice and lessons learned.

Key Accountabilities

  • Environmental legal compliance in England & Wales.
  • Modernization and maintenance of ISO 14001 certification.
  • Delivery of environmental objectives, targets, and KPIs.
  • Driving environmental incident reduction.
  • Enhancing regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement.
  • Advancing sustainability & carbon reduction programmes.
  • Ensuring the effectiveness of environmental governance and assurance.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications

  • Degree in:
    • Environmental Management
    • Environmental Science
    • Sustainability
    • Ecology (or related discipline)
  • IEMA membership (Practitioner (PIEMA) or Full Member (MIEMA))
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor qualification
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable Qualifications

  • Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualification
  • Professional membership via:
    • IEMA
    • CIWEM
    • CIEEM (or equivalent)
  • NEBOSH Environmental Management certificate
  • Carbon Management qualification
  • Environmental Impact Assessment experience
  • Biodiversity Net Gain certification

Essential Experience

  • Significant environmental management experience in:
    • Infrastructure, utilities, energy, construction, or engineering sectors
  • Direct experience with ISO 14001 management systems
  • Working with regulatory bodies and statutory authorities
  • Supporting major infrastructure projects
  • Environmental auditing, compliance management, and incident investigations
  • Environmental strategy development

Desirable Experience

  • Power Transmission & Distribution sector experience
  • Experience with:
    • National Grid
    • DNOs (Distribution Network Operators)
    • Utility frameworks
  • Telecommunications infrastructure background
  • Renewable energy project experience
  • ESG & sustainability reporting expertise
  • Biodiversity Net Gain implementation experience
